So are the manipulation of telomeres the key to the fountain of youth and the cure for cancer ?

no, telomeres are just the plastic end of your shoe lace in analogy. The purpose of telomeres are to prevent destruction of certain important strands of DNA in a particular gene. without them important information in a gene would be lost in replication. In theory if they were infinitely long as to prevent cellular apoptosis they would cause the host cell to die because the cell would turn cancerous

As I approach my allotted threescore years and ten, your question sounds like an interesting theme for a Michael Crichton novel. I hate to think how short my telomeres are.
BTW, the plastic end of the shoelace is an aglet. Sorry, my pedant chromosome retains a long telomere
