Windows won't boot while USB external harddrive is connected. How to fix?

I have a USB external HDD connected directly to my computer. And when i boot up it freezes right b4 the memory check. I have gone into the BIOS and made BOTH f my hard drives priority over all other boot devices.

I need a fix because everytime i boot right now i have to turn off the drive and reconnect it. and it is very frustrating.

Update:

In response to comment number 1, i understand why cd-rom should be first, but i'm meerly trying to get my computer to boot without disconecting my USB external HDD. there fore i have my hard drives first.

theoretically... right now, according to my BIOS, it should be jsut fine...

I've seen that about a dozen times. Its just a compatiblity problem between the drive and the system board. NO fix for it.

Some boards dont mind usb devices plugged in at boot..others just wont come up.

My system, some usb plugged in it comes up fine...others it freezes.

Hmmm thats bizzare. Have you checked to see if your bios is being reset upon restart? (not sure how that would happen other then a boot sector virus)

Make sure your internal drive and the proper partion is set as the "boot from" device, by pressing F12 on the very first screen when ur computer boots..

If this still does not work it may be a conflict of hardware.

your cdrom needs to be numero uno and your internal drive needs to be numero dos. if you still got a floppy, add that to the list but probably could do without. THAT'S IT unless you have linux experience

if that don't help, you could buy a pci-usb port, it's about $20 at walmart and impossible to boot from in my experience
