How can I contribute to the gay community?
I am a junior majoring in infectious disease. I am thinking about volunteering in organizations such as the AIDS foundation or the Stop AIDS project. Is it a good idea? However, I dont know if I should do this because I dont have any sexual experience (but I do know lots about AIDS). Any ideas?
Or, what other organizations can I volunteer to? I am not good at writing, but I am good at math and science-related field.
I am from San Francisco. Of course I know AIDS is a problem not only for the gay community, but also a problem in many groups (remember, I am an infectious disease major... I know the AIDS stat for lots of groups...)

A local AIDS service organization would indeed be a good idea. Also, if there is a gay community center in your area, they are frequently looking for volunteers. You don't say where you are, so it is hard to give you anything more specific.

Dear Travis,
You could check at you local Health District, or contact the local GBLT for your area andsee if they have any suggestions.
Since you are Majoring in Infectious Disease's then the Health District would certainly be able to use you help I am sure. I think it is a great idea that you want to volunteer you time or whatever to the helping of others. You are to be commended for your efforts.
Good luck and God bless!

Travis,
Not only are AIDS organization a great place to volunteer, but the local LGBT Community Centers are a great place to also meet people with sim8ilar interets.
Mny communities are gearing up now for their Pridefests and parades and volunteers are always needed to assist.
Look at Interpride.org's 2008 calendar for the event listing in a city near you.

If I've said it once, I've said it thousands of times...AIDS IS NOT JUST A GAY ISSUE! It is an issue for the straight community as well. Now, I personally am not gay, but I have many friends and relatives that are, and I know that they would want me to make this point clear.
If you want to help the GLBT community...learn the history of them, and don't put them into some bogus generalization. THEN you can get involved!

Working with groups dealing with AIDs is a valuable contribution. Believe it or not, check the phone book and look up minority or sexual minority groups. There are all kinds of opportunities in many communities. Good luck.
