Japanese opinions on movie Tora! Tora! Tora!?

I just watched the movie and read that it was a bigger box office hit in Japan than in the USA. I was wondering what Japanese filmgoers thought of it at the time (1970).

When the movie Pearl Harbor (2001) was released, many Japanese said we should watch Tora! Tora! Tora! instead of Pearl Harbor because Tora! was considered more historically accurate and has no silly romance story. I think it's somewhat natural that Tora! got more attention in Japan than US because Pearl Harbor attack is one of the very few battle in WWII that Japanese won, and Japanese patriotic feeling must have had some effect to the movie's hit as well as not so big hit in the US.

Many other WWII movies depicted "Japs" as unintelligent, insane and fanatic so Tora! was accepted as 'fair' point of view. In addition, Tora! had many Japanese actors/actresses, unlike many other movies including Pearl Harbor that Japanese characters were acted by non-Japanese Asians and speak unnatural Japanese. So I think Tora! accepted as better or more natural (than other war movies) within Japanese audience.

"the Japanese admiral is kind of worried about awakening the sleeping giant"

You know that was fiction, he never said that in real life or thought it. Was a good history movie, had a good take on both sides.

I don't know what they think, I think it's the best Pearl Harbor movie ever made.
