Anyone know Microsoft Excel ? Help!!?

Here is my problem. I am trying to alter some cells on a worksheet that I've already created, and it requires me to change the width of some cells in a column. I know how to highlight the cells that I want to change and I know how to go to the format item and change the width, but even though I've highlighted the cells I want the change to affect, as soon as I do the formatting the whole column changes to the size I specified. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I just want to change the cells I highlight....thanks.

Update:

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure the cell width CAN be changed for chosen cells. One of my co-workers has done it. I would just ask him, but we don't get along. It's not just the width of another cell either, because the sheet he created had cells of various widths depending on the application yet it didn't affect the whole column. I just don't know how he did it.

WIDTH CANNOT BE SET FOR A SINGLE CELL.

but you can merge in with the 1 or more cells beside it, which makes it seem like that 1 cell is wider.(You can also merge with cells above or below to make a cell seem taller.)

To merge cells highlight them and click format>cells

Then on the alighnment tab (2nd tab) check the merge cells box under text control.

Merged cells will be the width of the combined columns, not just 1 column.

If you use a merged cell in formulas, you should reference only the first cell.

example in you merge A1&B1 and want to add 5 to the answer your formula would be =A1+5 if you click on the cell when writting the formula it might put in =A1:B1+5

Bernard is stupid and does not know what he's talking about.

You are not doing anything wrong. All cells in a column have the same width. All cells in a row also have the same height. That's just the way it works.

Here are a couple of strategies:

    1. For text, if the cell to the right is empty, the text will overflow and display in that cell giving more room to display data.

    2. You can merge cells making them effectively two or more columns wide.

the width property is set on a column level and not cell level. So in short, you can't do that. However, when you see some cells are bigger than the other is because they are merged together from mulitple cells. To do this, highlight the cells you want to combine, on the format toolbar, click the merge button (it is a little "a" with arrow pointing both ways)

You can't change the width of selected cells. The width is set for the entire column.
