Why would one goaltend a 3 pointer?

I read that Shaq goaltended a 3pointer by Finley during this playoff. First of all, how can this happen accidentally? You have to be amazingly slow witted to do that. Maybe the better question is why did he do that?

A goaltend isnt just blocking a shot as it comes down. A goaltend can also be when a player gets the rebound too soon. If the ball is still above the rim, it still has a chance to go in, so if you take it, is a goaltend. Thats what happened to Shaq. The refs made the right call.

Apparently what happened on that play was that Shaq anticipated the shot falling short and grabbed it out of the air while it was on its way down. The officials thought it had a chance to go in, so they called a goaltend. In reality, the shot most likely would have been short and had no real chance of going in unless Shaq would have fumbled it into the hole.

he could have anticpated it missing and the offical calls the tend because the ball was still in the cylinder. I didn't see the play so I don't know. Did the ball hit the rim first or back board or was it just Shaq jumping up and graping the ball out of the air?

It was a bad shot that hit the rim and bounced up while still above the cylinder, and it took a lucky bounce like if it was going in. Shaq thought it was out and slapped it away, and they called a goal tend.

He was trying to pin it to the glass, which would not have been goaltending (as long as it hit the glass before he pinned it)

Because he IS "amazingly slow witted"

He tried to be smart and get it before it completely fell off the cylinder... I don't even think it was going to go in...
