    Baking soda = sodium bicarbonate

    Baking powder = aluminum phosphate

    They ARE NOT interchangable.......

They are both used as leavening (things that make baked goods rise during the baking process)

I know baking powder makes something rise (like bread rises), and baking soda (which comes in a square box) is used like for keeping the refrigerator smell sweet, or as an antacid, or for brushing your teeth with. No, you can't substitute one for the other (only the names sound the same). Other people will add their info.
