I play High School Football and we wear it for 3 reasons

1.It makes us look bad ***

2.It cuts down glare form sun

3.Even tough no one admits it is is a psychological thing right before I hit the WR he looks at you and yo do look scary I have been on both sides of that so I know

Well first of all its called eye black and we wear it to keep the glare of the sun to a mininum. So we can focus on the ball if it is high in the sky. And it makes us look really cool.

Cuts down on sun glare and keeps some of the dust down that is generated when those bulldozers slam into each other and the ground.

A lot of athletes do it. They do it so the light reflects off of the paint, and not get into their eyes.

It's called eye black. It helps reduce glare.

It also has some psychological effects...

i believe it's used to cut down sun glare coming off of their cheekbones

Because when they wear it above there eyes they get beatup in gym class

Somehow it reduces the effect of sun glare
