How can we afford to have our child delivered without insurance?

My fiance and I are about to have our first child... it a girl! She is uninsured and dosen't qualify for medicare/medicade. Are there any agencies that offer financial help? I'm not sure we can afford to have our baby delivered and she's not willing to carry her around forever! Hehe Please Help!

Update:

I am just speaking of strictly the hospital delivery fee. They state I cannot have payment options.

Update 2:

these were all really good answers, but none were helpful. I make too much for medicaid, and the hosp doesn't offer payment plans WITH the selfpay discount. I will let this question go to vote. thanks anyway

this does not sound right. You should be able to get some type of medicaid. What happens when someone who does not have ins and gets sick in your town needs to go to the hospital? What does her doctor or clinic that she goes to for care say? I would call and check around at other near by hospital they are not going to let her not have the baby.

Talk to the hospital and they will probably work out a payment plan with you. You will most likely have to start making payments before my baby is born. I would talk to you Dr. he might be able to tall you more info on it.

My dr. recommended this to me before I finally got insurance

Do you live in the US? If so, she automatically qualifies for Health Insurance provided by the government Look into your local Department of Public Welfare office. They will be able to give more info!

I'm sure they found a way to deliver babies before the idea of hospitals and all that jazz came around.

a Certified nurse midwife is usually cheaper route to go. it cost about $3500 in 2005. that including sonograms.
