How do I close start-up programs I seldom use?

I'm running XP and have a high speed processor and tons of memory (including RAM), but my computer is sometimes slow to boot and my system rsources screen says I'm using more than 50% of my CPU capacity.

Help!

Thanks.

    solution 1:

go to start->programs->startup, check if there are any programs listed there. if you see some programs listed and they are seldom used, just delete the entries.

    solution 2:

go to start->run, type regedit. registry editor will open. go to LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\

    Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

check the values listed in the right window pane. if you see some programs listed there and they are seldom used, just delete the entry. BE CAREFUL! you are editing windows operating system registry database, and if you foul up it could crash your system. BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY before you tinkle with the data.

If your XP is running the cpu at 50% or more even at rest (no additional programs open) you might have a malware infection. aka spyware, etc...
