Need info on IDEA or American with Disabilities Act.?

3 weeks ago, my son fractured and dislocated his left wrist. He had to have surgery and is in a cast till May 20. Then he will be in a splint. He is 14. His school has not been particularly accomodating and in particular, he is expected to keep up with ALL the work in his keyboarding class, The work cannot come home and and the teacher does not stay after. It has been suggested that my son go to the class during homeroom to try to catch up, but there is no guarantee that he will be able to catch up or stay caught up. I cannot find any concrete info on whether he would qualify under either the IDEA or American with Disabilities Act. Does anyone know what his rights are? Do I need to hire a lawyer?

Under the ADA, if you can't do the work (keyboarding), you're not entitled to be given a free ride when you're hurt.

Sorry - your son needs to quit the class.

Good luck - hope the wrist heals ok!

  • I found the americans with disabilities website for you. Go to:ada.gov.

Also here is the idea website: http://www.ed.gov/policy/speced/guid/idea/idea2004...

I hope your son, and you can get the help you need.
