The Greek philosophers saw the logos or "Word" as the power which puts sense into the world, making the world orderly instead of chaotic. The logos was the power that set the world in perfect order and kept it going in perfect order. They saw the logos as the "Ultimate Reason" that controlled all things.
So basically John says to both Jews and Greeks: "For centuries you’ve been talking, thinking, and writing about the Word (the logos). Now I will tell you who He is." John meets both Jews and Greeks where they are at, and explains Jesus in terms they already understood, Jesus being the "Word."
Edit: "And the Word was with God, and the Word was God:"
We can follow John’s logic:
There is a Being known as the Word.
This Being is God, because He is eternal (In the beginning)
This Being is God, because He is plainly called God (the Word was God).
At the same time, this Being does not encompass all that God is. God the Father is a distinct Person from the Word (the Word was with God).
So, the Father and the Son (the Son is known here as the Word) are equally God, yet distinct in their Person.

The Word of God, which is Christ. By Word of God, it's not talking about the Bible per se, though the Bible is the Word of God. Christ is the The Word of God through whom all the universe was made. Ever notice, in Genesis "God said" let there be this and that. He spoke, through his word he created everything. John also tells us the through Christ the Word, the Son, was everything made.
Think about this, whatever your thoughts are, that you want to convey to someone else what do you do. You use words. God said that words are spirit. The Son eternally begotten from the Father is the Father's Word spoken perfectly though his Son. Don't misunderstand this, the Son never had a beginning. He is eternally begotten, meaning the Father has always been speaking his Word. And, you can't separate them, just like you cannot separate your thoughts from you, they are you. Thoughts are you, thoughts which what words are, thoughts conveyed.

Ed F: "In the begining was the word and the word was with God and the word was God."
........well that was a bunch of nothing! If at the begining was the word, and "the word was with god" and then it was god...soooo who said it?
What I understand is the last part "the word was God"....so someone else said "God" for he to become it...I mean, someone has to give you a title for you to become that, if the first person would have called a King a Pear then the word King would have never existed in the context we use it today.
Someone created god by calling god...that makes god non-existent imaginary being. It was a creation allright, by man. In other words, there was language before god.
God was a way to explain the unexplainable. Simple, so someone said "I called onto god the almighty, I have the vision of his graces" and all of them fell for it like many before them fell for their gods.
EDIT:
Vetti, how can it be Jesus Christ when it clearly states "and the word was God"...the word was not Jesus Christ, it was G-O-D...god.

It doesnt seem simple to understand, but the Word is Jesus. God spoke the world into being, and Jesus is God. Jesus was with God before He came to earth.
Some things we cannot fully comprehend. After all, God is, "I AM".

"In the Beginning was the word" corellates to Genesis, where God spoke and the world was formed. We cannot comprehend the significance of this, can we?
