Any atheist fans of Kurt Vonnegut?
I'm curious if anyone in here has read Slaughterhouse Five and what your opinions are on the form of predestination it presents.
What do you think the universe would look like to someone observing it from outside space and time, or to a race that percieved time significantly differently from humans?

I love Slaughterhose Five. I haven't read it in forever though.
I like the idea that events happen, have happened, and always will happen. It's quite different from the usual idea of time being linear.
I can't really imagine what it would look at to look at things from outside space and time.

I've read several of his books and enjoyed them, though I haven't read "Slaughterhouse Five" since my freshman year in high school. His social commentary is rather hit-and-miss, in my opinion; although I thought "Harrsion Bergeron" was spot-on.
I'd like to think that life isn't predestined -- it certainly doesn't feel like it, from this perspective; and I'm not sure I would want my consciousness expanded to the point where I could see that it's all already laid out for me.

I am a huge fan. Imagination is a wonderful thing. Its just that atheists recognize the difference between fantasy and reality. Most of the best known sci fi writers were admitted atheists. Fear is an imagination killer, and all religions are based on it. That, and the complete and utter suppression of knowledge.

I love that book and many of his others. My goal is to read them all.
I think seeing the universe in frozen moments of time much like the alien life did in the book would be strange. You could go back and look and see if what religions say is true or not. If it were true you could say A&E, Noah, S&G, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad. And these figures would be frozen in what ever act they were doing. You could see Jesus getting everybody drunk or Buddha sitting under his tree.
More likely you could see just how wrong religion is.
