Why doesn't McCain support the 2008 GI BIll?
The bill, sponsored by former Marine Jim Webb, has broad bipartisan support and provides Iraq and Afghanistan vets with a World War II style GI bill.

Why won't McCain support the bill? Instead he wants his own less generous bill. I say he does it because he is worried about making life too easy for vets outside of the military - if you make their options outside the military more attractive, they might want to leave, especially if they are staring at tour of duty number #10 in year 7 of McCain's administration (and year 7 of 100 of the occupation).
Is the new Republican policy making life harder for vets outside of the military to increase retention rates and fight the war for longer?
To all those who claim that this bill supports "pork," could you please provide a source or one shred of evidence? If you can establish that this bill pays to build a bridge somewhere then you get the 10pts. The only arguments that have actually been made against the bill by the White House are that the bill is too generous and would hurt retention.
To Cynical: Is paying for four years of room and board too high a price to pay to someone who risked their life for their country? It's not like they are paying for them to stay at the Ritz, or even to go to Harvard - the bill only pays for a public university education and the costs associated with that. Not every GI will want to go to college, but the ones that do shouldn't have to serve you burgers in the cafeteria to pay for their living expenses through college. If they paid soldiers better than maybe I would be sympathetic to your comment, but paying for room and board hardly qualifies as pork in my view.

McCain has a long record in the Senate of not supporting the troops or the veterans. Of course, he always supports sending them into harm's way, but has opposed every pay increase, every bill for personal body armor, bills to assist their families while the GIs are overseas and every positive change in veterans' benefits.
Perhaps he's bitter about the Army not launching a 1,000,000-man offensive to free him from the Hanoi Hilton all those years ago, back when he was busy confessing to war crimes, and is taking his bitterness out on the current GIs.
Oh, wait! We're not allowed to use the word "bitter" to describe people who are insanely angry and frustrated! Quick!!!! Somebody come up with a synonym!

There isn't much information about the GI bill on that website. However, it seems that Webb wants the new GI bill to cover all expenses of college including room & board. Must the government pay for every little expense of the soldier after his service? These men are serving because they want to not because they are looking for a handout. I know many will say "they fought for our country" or "this are the incentives to get people to join the military". The website claims that the bill will bring better standards into the military which has gone downhill. I guess McCain should like that but he doesn't believe the GI bill will bring about any change or incentives.

It is pretty clear that McClone is your typical Neo-con that only support themselves. The military to a Neo-con is just for puppeteering. The Republicans cut military benefits the last 10 years while being in total control of the military with their majority Fascist rule. Bush and McClone want to hold the U.S military hostage in Iraq for 100 years to protect the oil barons interests not the soldiers, so raises are completely out of the question....look the Republicans have never, ever raised minimum wage or allowed a living wage, the cheap-bastards only line their own pockets at everyone elses expense. I once was a Reagan Republican, now I have to vote for Obama because of Bush and the Fascist.

He opposes it because a vet is anyone that was in the military including young fit and able people that are quite capable of still working and don't need handouts from a country in economic trouble.
Not to mention the pork having completely nothing to do with vets involved that the democrats refused to vote for the bill unless the pork was added.

Republicans say they support our troops, but apparently it's only when those soldiers are actively serving in combat. Once they come back home the republicans have no use for them, and therefore don't "support" them anymore.

they don't want to make goin back to civilian life more prosperous than reenlisting because they are having serious recruiting problems~!!!
wow, i wonder how much of a bonus they are giving for your 10th time reenlisting~??!!

Have you actually read the bill? Of course you haven't, liberals don't read before they whine.
That bill is exactly why we have over spending, because Congress adds pork into just about every bill and this pork has nothing to do with the original bill.
