Help with new wide-screen monitor..images stretched?

Good news, new computer arrived today. Bad news, everything is stretched. Doesn't bother me too bad about the words and icons, but I am a photographer and all photos are distorted. I have tried setting properties to various resolutions, low to high but images remain distorted. I am not a computer guru, so if you can help with a simple answer, I would appreciate it. It's a Dell if that matters, with a 20" flat screen. Thanks so much!

Update:

Going to a higher resolution does not help with the stretched distortion. Also, the higher the resolution goes, the smaller the fonts become. I have it on extra big fonts, which only changes the size at the top, and not throughout the page. I guess I am going to have to call Dell :-(

Update 2:

I did call Dell. They want over $200 to buy something called "software support warranty". That is in addition to the warranty we already have on the hardware. He said the "warranty" covers 4 major calls about software issues in one year, and if the problem was just a 10 or 15 minute fix, there would be no charge. He suggested I do the online support that is installed, I have an SOS in to a computer friend, and am waiting to hear. Thanks for the replies so far.

Update 3:

Oh, one important thing I forgot to add, we are running XP, not Vista.

Wow, how frustrating! Without being able to see your computer monitor settings or talk to you about them....it's kinda hard. It sounds like your computer is set to a widescreen format. If your running on Vista...you can change that under your display options. But, honestly, if it's a new computer, I would call Dell and have them walk you through the change. Their customer service rocks!

Sorry I couldn't be more help! Good luck!

Go to control panel and then click on display and then go to the settings tab and mess with the screen resolution. It should fix your image. Usually 1024x768 is good or 1280x800 or maybe you have 1344x840. I have a 24 inch and I have mine to a resolution of 1920x1200. You may not have that option but try and mess with the resolution. I do not recommend you going 800x600 because it is horrible and looks real bad and huge. Go with the highest one (resolution option) you have.

This what happened to me..My pics were stretched on my emachine monitor..I went to my computer Acer support and they gave me links to driver downloads for my video card .It kept saying the downloads were not compatable....Interesting I had just installed a corel Draw programme then my pics stretched more on my monitor..Ok so I typed my devices in to my search box. Clicked on device Manager. double clicked on display adaptors. Double clicked on IntelR Hd /graphics Family. Went to the bar at the top of menu Clicked action and chose to scan hardware...Scan said My intel R Hd graphics family had been disabled. I enabled it and my Monitor returned to normal. It looks great no stretching.. So perhaps installing corel draw didabled it..I don't know..I have windows 7..I would recommend everyone to do a scan of there Divices...The scan will tell you if any are disabled..

Does over wide screen text affect glaucoma equivalent sufferers.

It is suggested that 13 inch width text is detrimental and the nominal must be 6.5 inches.

Hmmm, with our widescreen tv, there's an option to stretch the image. Could it be set for something like that?
