How do you rate a player?
What are the attributes that football (soccer) commentators and fans use to rate a player's performance in a game? Is it based on things like balls won/lost, good runs and passes, staying in position, etc? I'm starting to move out of 'novice' to 'intermediate' football fan but I'm still not sure how to tell if a player is any good.

it depends on the position the player plays.
for a defender : if they stay on there man and dont allow there mark to score, it can be said that they played a good game.
if they consistently stop there man on 1 on 1's and contribute to offense they would have a great game.
For a midfielder: if they give there forwards good chances at the goal and keep possession for there team they would have a good game. If they do all that and score a goal it would be a great game
For a forward: If they are creative in the attack and consistently score goals every couple of games they would be considered good.

Although in England the rating of a player tends to be mainly opinion-based with goals/clean sheets/games won used to back up the statement, depending on the position of the player.
