English is spoken in major cities in Taiwan like Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung and Kaohsiung. English is seldom spoken outside major cities and hardly any people speak English at the countryside. You have to stay to tourist areas of many cities to get English spoken to you, apart from Taipei City itself, which many people there speak English quite well, especially the younger generations.

I wouldn't exactly say that English is widely spoken, although we have noticed that more people speak decent English now than a few years ago. In the big cities, (Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung) you should have no difficulty getting someone who can at least speak enough English to help you. The people are generally very hospitable and kind.

Mandarin is not widely spoken outside Taipei, and Taiwanese is different enough to almost sound like a foreign language. In small towns, it is likely that nobody except the doctor and a few teachers will speak any English at all.

Taiwanese know some English, but you're not going to be able to get a full conversation out of them if you only speak English. A lot of Taiwanese study English in school, but truth is, they won't really understand you unless you speak Mandarin and/or Taiwanese.

In the big cities, such as Kaosiung and Taipei, some of the big restaurants and malls will have some English signs and menus. Some "big city" hotels will have someone who can speak good English to accomodate you. The last time I went to a hotel in Taipei, they had two staff people that spoke English as their first language.

No, English is not widely spoken.

Ive been there last year and had my Mandarin speaking husband speak with most Taiwanese. When asking around, young taiwanese people will have the grasp of English.

Also, take note that hotel staff have a problem in speaking english but ,not to worry, there are few English certified speaking staff who will accommodate your enquiries. Just look out for hotels with English certificate.

In the 3 major cities, Taipei, Kaosiung, and Taichung, you will probably find someone around who can help you (somewhat) if you are having issues. about 2 out of 10 restuarants will have english menus. (probably its a higher ratio than that, but I am trying to be conservative...)

You probably will still need to brush up on your smiles and charades a bit. But you can get by quite easily here with just English, many of the expats here still cant speak much Mandarin.

I've been living in Taiwan for ages now. More and more people do speak English. Often people come to ask me if I need help because they wish to practise their English. Only, they show surprise when I answer them in Mandarin!

You dad won't understand that he became having a adverse impression on your will to communicate Mandarin while he made exciting of you. If I have been you, i'd have a stable communicate with him, tell him my undertaking and that he could quit doing that to deter me. What if he basically could not quit? properly, I additionally must know it rather is basically some exciting, not some fault. the suitable ability to develop your spoken Mandarin, of course, is to prepare. talk talk talk. talk extra. talk on your mom and dad, on your human beings who talk chinese language, on your grandparents (and this shall cause them to satisfied). As I see it, human beings talk to communicate, to not practice how stable they are at some language, so whether you have an accessory, it rather is not appropriate. do not enable this 'accessory' ingredient hassle you, basically talk and sometime you will locate it rather is long previous.

possibly coz english is internationally spoken.

just buy a 2nd hand taiwanese language book so you'd understand, and a lonely planet guide book, they're the best.
