Where does Oklahoma red dirt come from?
The deeper layers around here reveal compressed sand and sandstone. Underneath that is ~30m-year-old, fossilized ocean-bottom.
This area is flat and has no volcanic activity that I know of. So where did all this red dirt come from?

You probably mean central Oklahoma; the ground around
that area is brick-red in places. The red color comes from
small amounts of ferric (iron) oxide mixed in with the clay
and other materials that form the dirt. Apparently the ferric
oxide was present in the same rock formations as the other
materials that weathered over the years to form the soil and
mixed in with it, giving it the red color.
Incidentally, it is very good for growing many crops. If there
is ample rain, that is good farm land.
Source(s): I went to the University of Oklahoma and have analyzed samples for iron content - it's there. - Anonymous5 years ago

When the weather is colder than I like for bathing but bathing necessary I get a bucket of warm/hot water, shampoo and brush and I spot clean. If there is a large red spot on my gray horse I clean that by dipping the brush in the warm water, putting some shampoo on the brush and then scrubbing the horse with it adding more water to the brush as necessary. I then use some non soapy water and another brush to rinse with and get the soap off. I squeegee the water off as much a possible, scrub up with dry towell and then cover the horse with fleece cooler til she's dry. For the rest of the horse I use Show Sheen liberally the day before the show (and after any bath the horse might get) and brush well with a stiff brush. The next day I brush and brush and brush. The Show Sheen actually repels dust and dirt out of the coat.

Most of the red dirt you see in Oklahoma - at least around OKC is derived from the Hennessy Shale which is Permian(?) age about 230 milliion years old ......it is definitely NOT 30 mmilion years old.
