My true opinion for what it's worth is stay put, obviously there are many people who appreciate you on this site and it would be the poorer for it if you departed. That goes for others who have expressed the possibility of leaving, you people are what makes the site what it is, and worth visiting, already some have gone and we should try to encourage them to come back.Recently everyone who answered what was a very innocent question got a thumbs down and I couldn't for the life off me see any reason for it.Let us start a return to Seniors campaign and get it back to how it should be, I am a only recent visitor to the site and have made a very good friend here.

You need to call a nursing home activities director. You might need to fill out a little paper. If you have a well behaved dog with all his shots etc you could do pet therapy. I do pet therapy pretty often and they do love seeing the dog. If you dont have a dog then you can walk around say hello, introduce yourself and just get acquainted on your first visit.
If they dont have a visiting library mobile you might be able to find books and magazines for them to read.
This opportunity is endless and I think its great that you are so caring.

Years ago my wife was visiting on the front porch with 2 or 3 other ladies in the neighborhood and I stopped over to visit 2 neighbors a couple houses down. This woman was in her 90's with her daughter in her 70's. The mother was watching out her window at my wifes little gathering and made the comment that she would love to be able get out and visit with them and see all her neighbors.
I contacted all the neighbors and some of her family members and we had a neighborhood cook out in her backyard. all neighbors were invited and we introduced new neighbors and pointed out where they lived.
We thought perhaps it was getting to be too much for her and silently didn't plan one year but she began asking when the party was. She and her daughter passed on a few years ago and I recently came across photographs of her holding babies from the neighborhood and she looked so happy.
We planned for her but the entire neighborhood benefitted from it.
I realize that this wouldn't work in all situations but I bet you can come up with something.
If you don't live in that neighbor hood, a bowl of soup or prepared meal would probably be appreciated with the visit.

Your local newspaper should have a volunteers section that lists stuff like that.....from my personal experiences with visiting my 93 yr old great aunt in a nursing home the elderly are lonely & alot of them have nobody & they are always happy to have any young person stop to talk with them even if its only for a few minutes.......what a great thing to want to do & it will definately make someones day

Talk to your minister, priest or rabbi or imam, find out who the shut ins or elderly persons are and ask if you can do some friendly visiting.
Get involved with volunteering either at a local seniors centre or seniors home or even in the hospital as volunteer, saying you'd like to specialize in senior citizens.
Good for you for looking for ways to help.

Some persons in homes need help just to get some basic shopping done, or mail letters. Some need help reading the newspaper, usually front page. Ask at office where you might help out at. You may need take a introduction tour first then be introduced to persons that need vistors or helpers. *mamatx

Just phone up the nearest old folks nursing home, and make an appointment to see the matron. That is a good idea and the old folk will look forward to seeing you.

There are a lot of people in nursing homes that never get any visitors. Those are the ones who would really appreciate you stopping by.

if you have elder neighbors start there -- but do not be pushie -- not everyone likes company -- a nursing home is a great place to visit the head nurse can point out the talkers!!!!
