The drive that you are inserting your USB is probably already an active drive on the desktop and therefore is not reading that particular USB. You can try this and see if it opens your USB:

-put in your USB and let the computer detect it

-right click on the 'My Computer' icon

-click (left mouse button) on Manage

-double click (left moust button) on Disk Management

-locate your flashdrive (it usually would say USB or travel drive or something to that effect) and right click on it

-click (left mouse button) on 'Change Drive Letters and Paths'

-click (left mouse button) on 'Change'

-select a letter that is uncommon (one towards the end of the alphabet is better)

    -click 'ok'

    -click 'Yes'

And your USB should now open up with all your documents stored.

If that doesn't work, you should put your USB to one of the USB ports in the back of the computer, which may open the it as well.

Solution #1, reboot, see if rebooting allows it to get recognized Solution #2, try another USB port and see if it works. Solution #3, get a USB 2.0 PCI card and see if that solves your problem. I am having this problem with my printer right now, it seems that using a certain USB port causes an error, I plugged it into another one and it works fine... for a while but the error shows up again and I switch ports and it works again. This is on a new motherboard too and a Gigabyte no less (K8U-939). It's a hardware problem, not software. And the problem is not your pen drive, the problem is that your USB port is having an unspecified malfunction (I don't know what's wrong with mine either).

The vast majority are formatted in fat -16 which should be plug and play for all major Operating systems.

You may have slight problems with your USB drivers for your pc... I would find your motherboard manufacturer and product code and then see if there is any updates available.
