my female mice ate my male mouse...why?

the story is..... i still have the first 2 mice that we bred from and when the babies were born i separated the male and female. out of that litter i kept one girl and left her with her mum. I put the male back in with the 2 girls and at first they fought but all got along and he got them both pregnant. Those babies are around 3 weeks old now. They have all been snuggling together with the babies and this morning i checked in the cage to find the male dead with his head missing. Any ideas why? I have heard of 2 females fighting but not killing a male.

A possibility is that they felt the male was a threat to their babies. Remember animals don't tend to have that 'family mentality' even though he's known to you as the dad to the female mice he's just a male mouse. Another thing is I know female rodents after giving birth can sometimes not keep themselves well nourished so they may eat either the babies or the cage mate for protein.

The first possibility is more likely which is why with animals its important to remove the males.

I'm not sure about mice, but I've heard that when a rat's cagemate dies, the others will try to either bury it by covering it with the cage litter, or destroy the body by opening it up. If this is true for mice, then it might be possible that the male died of natural causes and the others attempted to bury it. However, I'd double check the facts before confirming anything.

Lol I have no idea why he did this. It could be that your female was actually mistaken for a male and your mouse recognized him/her as a threat. Just get another pair, maybe from a breeder would be better so he/she can properly sex the mice. Also, just ignore the uneduacted people who call it cruel to feed mice to reptiles. We know that it truely isn't and it's the only thing they can eat. Snakes aren't vegitarians people.

probably because he died and rodents eat eachother when their dead because in the wild the live in burrows usually and eating eachother it the easiest way to keep their home clean

animals don't usually resort to cannibalism unless they're starving. they also don't resort to murder unless it's to save their own life.
