My budgie is losing his feathers..?
I noticed yesterday there was a HUGE pile of feathers in the bottom of his cage. Today, every time he moves or flies he loses another 2 or 3 feathers. He's nearly a year old and had his first moult around 4 months old..but he didnt seem to lose this many feathers...he's looking a bit shaggy but doesnt sound at all sick...he's his normal noisey self!! Any ideas??
Also, he's a pretty good talker...will he continue to learn new words after he's a year old?? Or should I give up trying?
THANKS!!
He's not bored...he has free range of my house...numerous toys and 4 housemates to choose from...I dont think he is plucking them out..they just fall out whenever he shakes/ruffles his feathers or flies

Molting. It's spring...I have two budgies going through it right now. What you can do to make sure he's getting the nutrience he needs during this time (which takes a lot out of them) is to give him mushed up hardboiled egg. Just a tsp or two a day, with a little bit of his favorite food on top to get him interested. You can include the shell ground up, some birds will eat the shell, others won't, but it's very good for him.
My budgies don't talk, but my cockatiel does. He's 2 years old and still picking up words and phrases, but not as often because he has some that he really enjoys saying and mostly sticks with those, throwing in others on occasion. We repeat all of his phrases to him so he doesn't forget and I'm trying like crazy to teach him "I'm an Eagle" but he hasn't gotten it yet. I do have faith he will learn it though, he's very interested in me when I repeat it.
I forgot to add that although my budgies aren't talkers, they are 5 years old and picking up special whistles from my tiel. I didn't think of it yesterday because they're so quiet when they do it, but just the fact that they started doing them at 4 years old makes me certain your budgie isn't done learning. Just be persistent.
I also had an older cockatiel that never said a word, then one day when he was about 6 years old he belted out *tsk tsk tsk come here* so they are never to old. They just have to be interested.

The big pile of feathers is most likely still from molting. They loose all of their feathers, and it can all be lost in a short period of time. Because he is still acting normal, just assume that nothing is wrong. If he continues to loose feathers and it does not look like any are growing back, or if he starts to begin to act erratically, just call the vet or your local pet store, just to clarify that nothing is wrong. Better safe than sory! But don't worry right now.
As for talking, he will most likely continue to learn. It takes about a year to form a strong bond, so just keep training it for about 20 minutes a day, at least, and it will continue to learn.

is he plucking them out himself or are the falling out pluckingis a behavior problem if they are falling out rapidly he could have beak and feather disease this doen't mean he is dying but he will be bald for the rest or his life molting should only leave a feww small bald spots not giant ones or huge piles he will stay like himself if he has pbfd but will not groww many new feathers if any yes he can still learn more words so keep working with him budgies are very good talkers

Take him to the vet. If it is a girl, it might be an instinct to pluck feathers to build a nest. Some male and female budgies hav this habit. Get him a toy (grroming toy) that he can groom and play with instead of pluck feathers.

He is probably molting again. They molt quite a few times in their lives. There is a SMALL possibility he has mites, I highly doubt that though. Check to see if he scratches his head very often or rubs his body ( other than abdomen ) on objects. He is most likely molting, though. And yes, they can learn many new words no matter what age.

He is either plucking them all out, or something is making them break. I would suggest calling a vet and asking their opinion on the matter. You may need to spend more time with the bird or get it more toys if it is a plucking problem. I find it strange, though, that they fall out when he moves. That is a cause for concern.

probably molting, but you can never be too careful. Check te web on this subject and if it does not go away contact vet. is your bird under any stress? have you noticed him ever plucking?

ok it is either molting, suffering from stress or some other sickness. research online or call a vet.
