The Land of Elyon Book1:The Dark Hills Divide
By Patrick Carman
(There are three parts, but it's really good.)
Summary of Part 1:
Twelve-Year old Alexa Daley is spending another summer in Bridewell with her father. She looks forward to exploring the old lodge where she stays each year, with its cozy library and maze of passages and rooms. She's also eager to finally solve what lies beyond the immense walls that were built to keep out an unnamed evil that lurks The Dark Hills---an evil the townspeople are still afraid of.
As Alexa begins to unravel the truth about what lies outside the protective barrier she's lived behind all her life, she discovers a strange and ancient enchantment. Armed with an unexpected new power, Alexa exposes a danger that could destroy everything she holds dear---and change The Land of Elyon forever.
It's really good, one of my favorites.
Here's another(It's a classic, sorry no summary)>

"The Ax" by Donald Westlake is a good chiller. A printing plant employee looses his job and can't find new employment due to his age. He decides the only way he will ever get rehired is if he kills off everybody with his job qualifications. How can he find those rivals? Will he have the guts to commit murder? Can he escape the law?
For light, fun fantasy I recommend Robert Asprin's Myth series. In "Another Fine Myth," Skeeve has a lot to learn in the magic department; too bad his master has just died while summoning a demon. Now the demon, Aahz, needs Skeeve's help getting home. No wands or schools of magic; none are needed. This is light reading and a lot of fun; but Asprin's ablity to teach on a variety of topics is inspiring. I also recommend Asprin's Phule's series and Time Scout series co-written with Linda Evans.

I personally loved Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen (the three books in the Abhorsen trilogy) by Garth Nix. These books are generally considered "young adult" books but anyone older would also enjoy them.
For a more adult fantasy novel, try a book by Neil Gaiman. American Gods is very good.
For mysteries, try some works by Elizabeth George and for a classic "scary" read, you can always go with some Poe.

As far as fantasy I would suggest the inheritance cycle by Christopher Paolini (Eragon but the movie was HORRIBLE compared to the book)
and another would be Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth Series. It is an excellent read (Wizard's First Rule is book 1) but be warned! The content can get gruesome and explicit! It is not written for a younger audience.

Read 1984 by George Orwell. It's very politically and metaphysically intriguing.
Also read the entire Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series by Douglas Adams. It's absolutely hillairious, yet still quite philosophically stimulating.

I love all of Meg Cabot and Sophie Kinsella's books. I am in the process of reading Emily Giffins books now. They are really great authors.
