How to I put in low-lights in my hair?
I have platinum blonde (bleached) hair but I'm gettign tired of it. I know how to do highlights - it's trivial, you pull the strands through the plastic hat and you bleach them. But I want the whole lower part of my hair to be darker, and some strands on the top, too, to be darker. How to I part them for coloring?
Please don't tell me to go to a professional, I could come up with that idea on my own. I've done all my hair coloring in the past by myself, including going from cherry-red to platinum blond.
Thanks.

Hi, I have attached vid.
First, you will need some basic supplies. Some of it you may have, other things you can substitute for things you do have. Here’s the list:
1. Hair coloring – depending on what you would like to do, purchase bleach, coloring, etc. If you are brand new to this “do-it-yourself” concept you can practice by buying 7-day color. This is a temporary hair dye that comes in many different colors and washes out in 5 days or less (it says 7 but it’s a lie!) In fact, if you REALLY hate your craftsmanship, you can even get it out the same night if you wash and rinse about 4 times! This stuff is pretty cheap (about $6) so it’s good to practice with.
2. Vaseline – You will want to put this around your hairline so you don’t dye it. If you’re not using gloves put it on your cuticles too. Any lotion will work fine though if you don’t own Vaseline
3. Foils – Get foils from a beauty store like Sally Beauty Supply if you plan to do highlights or lowlights. The come in a pack of 50 – 100. Very useful. But if you don’t want to get them just cut aluminum foil, it works fine too. But you will ALSO NEED something to put the foils on, like a piece of cardboard that is the same size as the foils.
4. Brush – You have to have a brush for the application of the highlights or lowlights. If you really want to cheat, use a flexible comb.
5. Mixing Container – You should have this included in your hair highlighting kit but if you don’t get an old Tupperware or any other dish that you don’t plan to reuse.
6. Hair Clips – These will hold up your foils so you can do the under layers.
Now that you have your ingredients you will want to lay out a design, or a “plan” for your hair. So determine where you want your color to be. If you want super subtle highlights or lowlights just apply your dye to the comb and brush through hair. If you want more dramatic highlights (think streaks), then you will want to carefully plan where to place them.
To begin, start with your top layer of hair. Place on foil onto the cardboard and set desired amount of hair on it. Use your brush to apply dye/bleach evenly. Once you have finished coating this piece, fold foil onto itself to ensure that no liquid will drain out. Then using your clips, secure this foil with the hair in it, to the top of your head. Continue to finish top layer then begin on the second layer.
Your head will look like a crazy mess of foils before you are done. This is ok! Nobody is going to see you in this stage anyways!
Once you have finished your entire head, wait long enough to make sure all pieces have dyed evenly. Be sure to save some of your solution incase you need to touch up anything. Then remove foils and shower! It’s as simple as that!
TIPS:
1. Don’t cheat yourself on quality product. There’s plenty of no-name brand products on the market for $4. Since you are saving 80%+, get the name-brand product. I like Revlon because I know it works. The inexpensive products can turn out to be weird colors or not dye evenly. It’s really not worth the aggravation!
2. Plan to spend time working! This is not a 5-minute ordeal. So give yourself time.
3. Think Ahead. Before you begin, know what you want to achieve. Look online for pictures of celebrities whose hair you love and try to imitate it.

Why don't you leave some of your blonde out ( not thin chunky) and get your hairdresser to tint the rest a darker shade. then you will have a foiled effect. You can then add or remove the blond every time you get your tint done.
