What do you think of the McCain & Clinton idea of suspending the fed. gas tax?
I think it is a horrible idea. This means the fed government is sacrificing funding for new roads and bridges. Also, if you are thinking you may drive more if the fuel is cheaper, who is clicking their heals all the way to the bank? Exxon, Bp, Citgo {little castro in venezula}. Spread the logical word.
One word : Anwar
we need to be self sufficiant

I agree with you, its a band-aid with preattached bacteria.
The fed tax is eighteen and half cents per gallon. Today, or at least this morning, gas was $3.67, for the past week it goes up in the afternoon.
If the tax were a percentage, then they might have a point.
But its not going to solve or slow the rise in oil prices. For that real action will have to be taken, like a tax on windfall profits or a demand that those profits be demonstrably used to fund alternative energy sources, or used to build refineries so we can stop hearing about the lack of refinery capacity.
No one has applied, let alone been turned down, for a new refinery in twenty years.
ANWR isn't the answer, if they started tomorrow it wouldn't be in production for over ten years. At its best estimates, they say there is ten years worth of oil.
The underwater fields in the Gulf and off the Florida coasts would be far more beneficial and cheaper to produce too.
Interestingly, both Alaska and Florida don't want off shore production. Both have strong Republican people in Washing ton. And Republican governors

We're neglecting our infrastructure. We just had a bridge collapse in Minnesota. Roads are in disrepair across the country. We uselessly burn gas on in traffic on inadequate roads. Suspending the gas tax will only make matters worse. It will not lower prices at the pump. Free market economists state that price is dictated by demand. Gas prices have gone up over 50 cents per gallon in the last month. If the government does not take the 18 cents, that goes right back into roads, Exxon, BP, Conoco, and Citgo will make more profit without lowering the price at the pump.

Buddy is absolutely correct! For anyone who doesn't know what he's referring to, then I wouldn't even bother answering this question because you don't have the full knowledge of how much the federal govt. wastes tax money on things that are totally NOT beneficial to us at all! Therefore, if they CUT their millions of dollars on spending on these earmark projects, ridiculous high salaries for themselves, these stupid space projects, etc...... then they will have MORE than enough money to make up for the lost gas tax, with money left to spare! Of course, that will help our economy a great deal! The money is out there, it's just being spent in many wrong places causing our country to be in debt.

Even with a suspended tax, there is nothing to stop the rise in basic price, which will happen over the summer because of increased demand and greedy OPEC. So it goes from $3.68 to $3.50 in June, then up to $3.70 in July, $3.80 in August, then the tax kicks back in at we're at $4.00. Talk about sticker shock!
Not a good idea.

First of all, it is not a McCain-Clinton plan. Both candidates have very different plans for a tax holiday.
McCain's plan involves suspending the 18.4-cent federal gas tax and 24.4-cent diesel tax, taxes which finance the Highway Trust Fund, a federal agency that funds road projects nationwide and is already facing a $3.4 billion shortfall. States rely on the federal highway money and there is no way they will just roll over and kiss that money goodbye. McCain's gas holiday plan is just another political maneuver to garner votes. It will never, ever actually happen.
Clinton's plan, on the other hand, requires Big Oil to pay for the gas holiday. Her plan makes sense to me. Why should Americans pay record high prices on gas when the oil companies are making record high prices?

This will benefit to Gas companies and then polticians.Once the tax is taken off, people fill try to get as much as gas and when tax day gets off, oil proce will rise more and more and it will be much moreexpensive what we have today. If you have read, Gas companies have already made very big profit so I think best option as...Govt should cut the profit margin from them and lower the price. It will be benefit to everyone.

It's not as bad an idea as raising taxes on the oil companies.
Removing gas tax is throwing a paper cup of water on a forest fire. But, raising taxes on oil companies would be throwing gasoline.

Both totally stupid. It only serves political Bull crap.
It needs to be increased by $1.00/ gallon. It will curb consumption greatly. Then watch how fast OPEC and Chavez drops their prices.
America has to stand up to the domestic and foreign oil tyrants an finally show some Balls.

It's another way of implementing socialism. If we continually expect the government to solve our problems we become more dependent on it. Eventually we lose the ability to think for ourselves. Be more independent and look to your self for things rather than the government. It's what makes capitalism and the free enterprise system work.
