What is your view on the 2 different types of "environmentally conscious" people?

You take 2 different routes when you are or decide to be environmentally responsible. You can do it because you really care about the environment, or do it because it's popular and it's what's "in" right now. A recent survey of people who bought a Toyota Prius, 60% said they bought it not for the economy or the environmental benefits, but because it gives an "appearance" of caring about the environment. This is what leads to people driving Suburbans with "protect the environment" license plates. How is driving an SUV that gets 14 mpg protecting the environment? How long have you been environmentally conscious (if you are) and do you know of any people that "fake" it? By the way one of my parents cared about the environment and recycled LONG before it was popular.

Update:

Spartaworld, I don't want to get into an argument with you so I will say that yes my last sentence was probably not needed, but was not intended to be self-promotion. I was simply trying to say that recycling was done long ago because people really cared not because they wanted to impress the neighbors next door.

Update 2:

I meant that comment towards genze not spartanworld.

The people who really do care about the environment are the future of making our world a better place. For the people who do it because it's popular, at least they're taking a step to helping the environment out instead of driving hummers and suburbans... and the people who are driving suburbans with "protect the environment" need a reality check on what protecting the environment is really about

I think that is true about any political issue or concern. Celebrities made HIV and AIDS popular now people fake being about breast cancer and the list goes on and on. I am care about the environment to an extent. My city does not pick up recycling and the closes recycling center is to far for me. So I don't do it. It takes to much out of me to take my news papers or magazines to the center. Now when i am at work i make sure my cans and bottles go in the right spots. We have paper recycling and i put things in there even though it is not mandated and not everyone does it. So I care if it is convenient. I just bought a car did not get a hybrid because it is to expensive. I did get a crossover with good gas mileage partly for my pocket and partly for the environment. I am glad i did because that was a few months ago before prices got this high.

This question is fine as far as it goes but most of the people buy or support the alternative vehicles because the price of (indecent) gas prices. Economy and environmental concern go hand in hand. BOO to the pseudo environmental SUV, etc. car drivers.

You'll find most people will eternally have their heads up their asses.

-That comment wasn't really necessary for your argument. That's just self-promotion.
