LOL.... oh this is funny... it depends on the horse... and what its doing... and its size... i'd be guessing a nice fat draft horse produces as much power as a small family car... it can pull the same if not more weight... it cant go fast but it can pull... i wouldnt want to stab in the dark at figgures but say the same as a 1.6 litre car...

A horsepower is just a scientific unit of power. (Power is work per time. Work is force times distance.) Just as feet or meters are units of length, horsepower is a unit of power. It is based on the assumption that a good horse could accelerate 550 pounds one foot in one second. Therefore, 1 HP = 550 lb ft/sec. The metric unit of power is the Watt.
As to how many horsepower a horse can actually produce, I suggest looking up the results of some of the pulling competitions they have for draft horses and see what kinds of power the horses are actually able to produce.

Not to fuel the stupid responses... but
Horsepower was actually defined by the work that a strong workhorse could put out. I believe it was to lift 100 lbs (using a pully) a distance of 100 feet over a certain length of time. I could be wrong on the numbers there.
Long of the short is that since it was defined by the work of a horse a horse would provide about 1 horse power.
Just keep in mind this was done with a work horse, so I would expect a race or show horse would likely provide a lower power output.

One horse is 1 horsepower. I supose an ubsurdly large horse could have 2 horsepower...but the average horse = 1 horsepower.

The amount of energy it takes to lift 33,000 lbs and hold it for 1 minute = one horse power on todays scale.
The scale of "yesteryear" is the amount of pulling power one horse exhibits in 1 furlong of running.
