The thirties was the decade when the dance bands rose to popularity, Paul Whiteman, Jack Hylton, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, and many others were beginning to dominate the music scene.

Some popular singers included Bing Crosby, Al Bowlly, Fred Astaire, Dinah Shore, Ruth Etting, the great jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.

There are enormous numbers of memorable songs from the thirties and it is tough to pick some out.

However, some memorable songs include 'Three Little Words' 'Embraceable You' 'On the Sunny Side of the Street' 'Puttin on the Ritz' 'Walking my baby back home' 'Got a Date with an Angel' 'Stormy Weather' 'Night and Day' 'Love is the Sweetest thing' 'the Very thought of You' 'Goodnight Sweetheart', 'Life is just a bowl of cherries' 'Happy days are here again' 'keep your sunny side up' and the memorable song of the great depression 'brother, can you spare a dime?'

My own personal favourite recording from the 30s is wonderful Fats Waller's recording of 'My Very Good Friend the Milkman', which is just sublime.

Robert Johnson (delta blues King), Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf (though not widely popular until the 1940's), Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald. Film and Broadway provided many radio hits of the 1930's.
