Suspending gas and electricity while I'm away?

I live in Queens, New York. I'm leaving town for six weeks later this month, and I wonder if it would be possible to have my gas and electricity shut off while I am away. I have never heard of such a thing, so I wonder if it is possible or worth it? I ask because I suspect that I may get a more lucid and helpful response here than I would by calling ConEd directly. Thanks.

Update:

I live in an apartment. I'm mostly concerned about safety. I have an old-fashioned stove with pilot lights. Maybe I could just disconnect the gas to the stove?

You'd be charged a disconnect and reconnect fee.

Are you doing this to save money? The electricity used while you're away wouldn't be much. You could turn off your furnace and water heater (I always do that) and turn them back on when you get home.

If you're not familiar with the technique of turning the gas back on, by all means call the utility company. They will turn it back on for free.
