Why don't people tip baggers (courtesy clerks) for carryouts?

First, I want to make quite clear it's for carryouts, not just bagging.

I have worked as a bagger/courtesy clerk for 9 months in the past and in a store located in an wealthy area. In 99% of the times I (or my co-workers) bagged groceries, took them to the customers vehicle and placed in the trunk, there's no tip.

People spend $100 in a restaurant and leave a $15-$20 tip.

They go to a grocery store a spend $200-$300 and can't give 50 cents or a buck for a carryout.

Mind baggers are close to minimum wage.

My guess is some people tip because the feel they are supposed to (or so they don't look bad) and not because they want to.

most people are under the impression you are not allowed to accept tips. thats what i thought.also when i was a bagger i was not allowed to. ther are a lot of occupations that deserve tips but dont get them.

Some grocery store companies, the management don't allow Courtesy Clerks to accept tips. Even though Courtesy Clerks get paid low wages and customers want to give them money, Baggers are usually young and still in school(High School or College) which they do not need the money.

Well in my own personal opinion...you are paid to be a bagger, that is your job. Why should someone give you a tip for doing your job? People should tip when they feel the service they have been provided was exceptional.

(And just so you know, I feel the same about waiters and waitresses in restaurants...they are already paid to do their job. Now, if they go above and beyond their job and do an excellent job, then they deserve a tip. But to me, a tip is something extra you get for impressing someone and doing something exceptionally. So if you're just doing your job, you shouldn't get a tip, period.)

I'd also like to add that I'm a cashier at a pet store and often do carryouts for customers, putting dog food or cat litter in their cars, never once have I been tipped and nor do I expect it. Even though it's not technically my "job" to do it.

When I was a bagger, we were not allowed to accept tips. Most people probably figure that you can't either. Yes, people do tip in a restaurant, but most waitstaff don't earn minimum wage. Because a tip is expected, they are paid less than minimum wage and the tips are considered part of their wage.

If what you are looking for are tips, then perhaps you need to change jobs. If you are looking for more income, once again, maybe you need to consider another line of work.

Wouldn't you rather people return to your store on a consistent basis, thus ensuring you have continual employment, than to move on to another store that doesn't have customers tip the baggers?

You need to learn from doormen, valets and bellboys... once you've put the bags in the car, stand there expectantly and look them in the eye, making it clear without saying a word and without being the least bit rude that you're waiting for something. If these people are as well off as you say, they know "the look" from being in hotels and getting it from the guy who carries their luggage to their room or the guy who parks their car. Don't be shy and don't just turn your back and scoot away. They'll get the idea and go digging for a buck... let them.

Otherwise, get a button or a T-shirt that says, "Tipping. It's NOT a city in China."

You're already getting a paycheque, are you not? Unless you were amazing at carrying out those bags, then suck it up. If you want more money, get employment elsewhere. If you're going to have a job where a college education isn't required, what do you expect?

I'm a college student, and do part-time work at a tech support company. I rarely get thanks, get yelled at, and definitely don't get tips.
