Replacing single pole light switch w combo switch/outlet?

Hi: Current situation is single pole light switch. Box has 4 wires: 2 black, 2 white. 2 white are currently twisted/taped together and tucked in back of box. 1 black goes to each of the switch screws.

I want to replace switch with a switch/outlet combo, i.e., one side of strap has 2 screws close together (with "break-off tab" I can't figure out how to break off, if I need to), other side has gold screw, center screw for ground, and silver screw.

What wire do I connect to what screw? And (well, you'll tell me this if you know the answer) do I need to pigtail any two of the screws to each other?

Thanks.

TURN THE POWER OFF. One set of wires (black, white, and bare copper) comes from the panel, the other goes to the light fixture. You need to first determine which is which. The 2 screws that are connected together are the hots. This is where you connect the black wire from the panel. The wires on the other side go as follows: the brass screw is for the black wire that goes to the light. That is your switch leg. You will need a separate piece of white and bare copper wire. Strip both ends of the white, and connect one end with the other 2 inside the wire nut. Same with the bare copper and the other 2 bare coppers. Then the white connects to the silver screw, the copper to the green screw. Install the switch in the box, turn the power on, and you are done.

You are in luck that you have a white wire there for your outlet.

First turn off the power, just to be safe I would go out and shut off the main switch where the power comes in. In your case you could just turn off the breaker for that circuit you are working on. Turn on the light, then have someone turn off the breakers one by one till the light goes out. Now you have to "pigtail" the whites (neutral) wires untape the whites, if there is a crimp under the tape you will have to cut that off, strip the wires back about 3/4 of an inch. Now you need another piece of wire about 6" long. take the three wires and twist them together with some pliers and put a wire nut on them a Red wire nut should work fine, twist it till tight. Now strip the other end of the white about an inch, now you have to make a hook. loosen the silver colored screw and put the hooked white clockwise around the screw and tighten. Now we have to guess which black is the power, if one wire comes in the bottom it is probably the power, if not you have a 50/50 guess. Take one black and make hook and wrap around one of the two tied together with a break off tab (DO NOT BREAK OFF) tie the last black wire to the screw above the silver screw (gold)? Turn the switch to the off position. Plug a light or something into the outlet. go turn on the breaker, if the light works we guessed the power correctly, if it doesn't work turn power back off and swap the black wires, screw the device back in and you are good to go.

OK first turn off power.Disconnect the switch, pull wires out where they are not touching anything.Turn power back on and take a electric meter and find which black is hot.Turn power back off.Take hot and wire nut two wires about 1 foot long together. The two whites are neutrals, wire nut one wire about 1 foot to it.So now you have three blacks and one white.Put 1 hot black on gold screw.White on silver screw. If it is on the outlet side. The other two wires are hot and switch leg to light.Wire them to remaining screws does not matter which. If switch side.

The wiring you described is correct. The hot (black wire) goes into the switch and then on to the light, the neutral (white wire) bypasses the switch and goes directly to the light and the grounds are connected together. You can cause a glow on some testers with static electricity, so if it is only a faint glow just be careful, keep the wired capped until you attach them one at a time and you should be fine.
