Irish whiskey is very smooth, as most of it is distilled three times (Scotch and American whisk(e)y are generally distilled less times.
The smoother scotches tend to be the older ones, because they mellow somewhat in the barrel when maturing.
I'd recommend Jameson 12 year old (about $35) and Jameson 18 ($80)
