When changing airlines on international flight, will I need to claim and recheck luggage at connecting airport

Flying Newark to Tokyo on Continental, connecting to Manila on Philippine Airlines. The flights were booked together. Will I need to exit the transit terminal, claim my bags, go to the Phil. Airline counter and check my luggage in again or can my bags be checked straight thru from Newark to Manila despite the airline change ?

It would depend if Continental has a baggage agreement with Philippine Airlines. When you get ready to check into your flight from Newark show the customer service agent your other ticket or receipt and if they can if they have a baggage agreement they will check in through. I would call Continental international reservations and check with them first before going to the airport.

If you are not leaving the terminal to get another flight, you won't have to go through Customs twice. If you are leaving the terminal to catch the 2nd leg of your journey, you'll have to go through Customs both times. Check with the airlines. They'll have all the information you need.
