Help me pick an international author to do an analytical essay on for my world literature class.?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for ideas on who to pick for an analytical essay. It must be a non-American writer from any region of the world. It would also be helpful if you could recommend a good book written by that author. Thank you very much.

I would commend an author that is an accomplished writer not well known to the Occident , Ryunosuke Akutagawa .

Mostly renown for short stories , i.e. Rashomon which was made into film by director Akira Kurosawa with the incomparable actor Toshiro Mifune , the two being well known in their craft .

Rashomon has come to be known to describe a single event as shown through multiple perspectives ; I would read and view both prose and film for the edification and pursuant of your essay .

Both are well regarded as works of genuine merit .

Good luck on your essay !

Russia: Fyodor Dostoevsky - Crime and Punishment, Notes from the Underground, The Brothers Karamazov; Leo Tolstoy - The Death of Ivan Ilyich, War and Peace

Africa: Chinua Achebe - Things Fall Apart; St. Augustine of Hippo - Confessions

England: C. S. Lewis - Till We Have Faces; Charles Dickens - Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities.

France: Alexandre Dumas - The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers; Victor Hugo - The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Les Miserables

Spain: Miguel de Cervantes - Don Quixote

Personally, I recommend the Russian authors. Crime and Punishment is not difficult to get through. Notes from the Underground and The Death of Ivan Ilyich are both pretty short; most of the other books I mentioned are quite lengthy and/or heavy. Depends on what you're interested in, really.

For an analytical essay, the British author Graham Greene is particularly interesting. His earlier novels are kind of romantic, fusing comedy and tragedy in a distinctive way that critics called 'Greeneland' These books include 'Stamboul Train and 'England Made Me' - Greene himself called them 'entertainments' and they brought him success as a novelist. Later books , starting with 'Brighton Rock' in 1938 took the theme that human justice is inadequate and irrelevant to the real struggle against evil - see also 'The Power and the Glory. 'The Heart of the Matter' and especially 'The Quiet American' using material he gathered in Vietnam in the early 1950s. He was a prolific writer, a number of his books were made into movies and there was a very good biograpy of him published recently but I cannot recall the details just now. A good librarian could help you with ctrtical studies and other reference material to help you with your project.

    Leo Tolstoy

He was Russian, and in my opinion his two most famous novels are War and Peace and Anna Karenina. I hope this helps.

    Bryce Courtenay.

He was born in South Africa and I believe he lives here in Australia. He has written many novels such as; The Power Of One, Tandia and Whitethorn.

In my opinion, writing your essay on Leo Tolstoy would be a better option as most of his books are quite lengthy and they woulod provide you with heaps to analyse.

"Hidden Camera" won an award for best fiction in early 21st century. Zoran Zivkovic is the author. It is a light mystery novel, with an unusual premise, related to its eastern european heritage of surveillance.

A little more info would be good. You could always do Dickens (Great Expectations is good and short for him).

You could do Dostoevsky and the brothers karamazov (all about justice)

    Tolstoy, Conrad, Atwood, Sheilds....so many.
