Best way to get rid of gnats in the kitchen?

The gnats are crazy in my kitchen. I don't leave food sitting out. I have no old fruit. I have no idea why they are so bad. Any remedies??

    There are 2 simple ways

    01. Nuke Them.

This is a good choice if you just have a few that wander in from outdoors. Just about any flying insect spray will kill them and very quickly. If the situation becomes an infestation, a fogger might be a better way to get the job done. If you use a spray and have pets make sure that you check the labels, and follow all directions for safe use. A less caustic approach would be to use insecticidal soap sprays.

    02. Track Them and Kill Them.

If you’ve got a swarm, you need to eliminate the source. It seems gnats are attracted to vinegar. Fill a jar almost to the top with vinegar, poke several small holes in the lid and then set it out. The gnats will come to the jar, wiggle down into the hole, and will not be able to climb back out. Set several of these traps around your home and monitor them to determine where the highest concentration is and use that information to find the source. Understand that the gnats that pester you in your home require moist or wet organic material in which to breed – it could be anything from a grimy drain to the drip pan under your refrigerator. Check your door and window seals also – they could be breeding right outside and wandering in.

They may be fruitflies, not gnats . . . if you have a disposal, run it, then run water down it over & over till it's really clean. Then put some ice down there a few times a day- it's gross, but if the bugs have a nest down there, they like it warm, and the ice will get rid of them. And if you have any fruit at all out on the counter, put it in the fridge till the problem clears up.

It wouldn't hurt to clean your trash can, too . . . sometimes there can be sticky (sweet) things at the bottom under the trash bag.

If they are fruit flies they can live on fruit, veg or fruit peel. When I got fruit flies I got rid of them by:

Keeping all soft fruit and veg in the fridge, or any fruit that has a bruise or blemish on it (they can't live on an apple, but they could live on an apple with a bit of broken skin).

Taking all left over fruit and veg straight to the bin outside, as if you put it in the bin in the kitchen they can live in there.

Putting bleach down the skin a few times a day for a few days, as they can live in the drain.

    This got rid of them.

They can even live on raisins, so be careful if you've got any chelsea buns or similar!

This page shows how to make a fruit-fly trap. I did this last year and it worked like a charm. The only problem is that there seems to be a never-ending supply of fruit flyst to trap so you have to solve the problem at the source. Our main problem was tomato gargen just outside kitchen. Also, keep all exposed fruits and vegtables in zip-lok bags.

If you have gnats you have a source.

Look under toasters, fridge, stove etc. small food scaps, puddles of fluid.

I had a small amount of banana peel under the fridge.

Small defoggers work great for gnats , but if there is a source ,they will return.

    Happy hunting.

You must have some fruit tucked away somewhere. If they are super black and a little bigger than average fruit flies, and seem to be near the sink, you could have a different kind of bug, one that comes from having standing water in the trap. In that case, have your drain rodded.
