AC Unit Help?

Hi.

I haven't used my AC unit in months due to winter, but now I went to turn on the AC 'cus it's hot and, indoor fan turns on, but the outdoor unit doesn't move and the air is still warm.

I know I set the thermistat right, and I went outside and the unit was faintly buzzing.

Any ideas? I don't know much about AC units but hopefully someone can give me ideas.

First of all check the electrical breakers. Re-set them even if they look ok. The buzzing noise you hear outside is the contactor, that tells me that there is not a control circuit problem. If the breakers are set then you could have a bad dual purpose capacitor on the outdoor unit.

The humming is the 24 volt transformer that pulls the second leg in for 220V. Turn off the power and access the panel. You will see a 2 pole contactor that 1 side is always on and the other has a spring loaded contact. Turn on the power and the contactor should pull in the contact. If not the contactor is bad. If you have minimal electrical knowledge you can fix it. Buy the contactor for about 25-35 and install. Only has 4 line voltage wires and 2 low voltage wires.

Remember to install horizontally and rear tilted 10 mm downward so that water can be drained thro. the hole. In the humid area you may need to install a basin with drain pipe beneath the ac. If your way of venting air causes low performance, you may need to install an exhaust fan at the end of the outside vent to improve the cooling of ac.

yep... contactors probably stuck... A professional can fix it quick and easy but you could give it a try.. You won't hurt anything.

I'm not sure what brand you have but usually you can take the top off ... You know what?... Never mind. If I were you I'd just call someone. It won't cost that much. Maybe $50.00 to $100.00. Depending on how busy they are and what city you live in.

dont ever stick your hands in the service compartment of your ac. even with the power pulled, the capacitor will knock you down wit its charge. that buzzing sound probably is your contactor which means it is working.

it could be a blown breaker in your panel box. it could be a bad capacitor or could be a seized up condensor motor. best left up tp a pro though
