In a welfare society one member casts aspersion. Is it a libel suit or defamation suit?

Dear All

One life member in a community society, has sent a letter alleging that the society is stealing money from the advertisement from the web site donated by another life member. This is purely to rile and heckle and no truth in this.

Need to know:

1. Best way to deal.

2. To file libel suit or defamation suit?

3. Can I challenge him to prove his allegation failing which to claim compensation of 5 laks??

Pls suggest how to deal it legally.

Update:

Life member is a member for life.

Community means can be taken as a society formed for their own sect or religion.

5 laks Indian rupees = 12500 USD.

This is one of the reasons why I make a mention "only legal luminaries to respond". But no offence. :)

Update 2:

Clarifications: Letter is sent by a member to the society alleging that the person who donated the web site is stealing money from the advertisements on the website. Hence I want to challenge this or file a suit asking him to prove it or pay for defamation as my integrity is sullied.

So pls suggest the best action to take.

it wont come either under defamation or libel. If a letter is sent to a person, with some false allegations, it is only that person who reads and it is not a public letter. in such a case no actionable claim lies. Further by such allegation, even though false, one must prove that his image has been tarnished and sustained damages. No suit lies. Best way to deal is to put facts before the members, and prove that the allegations are false. Except this no actionable claim lies, as it is a society not individual
