Is the mood about the future changing among Israelis?

I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF ONLY ISRAELIS OR OTHERS WHO KNOW A NUMBER OF PEOPLE LIVING IN ISRAEL WOULD RESPOND TO THIS QUESTION.

I was listening to the BBC World Service and they're having a special all week on this question. The woman who was interviewed yesterday was 33, secular, and liberal. ( I didn't catch today's, unfortunately.) She said that she sees a change because more and more young people are looking abroad for their future lives and it is now accepted as normal. Whereas 10 years ago, she says, it was considered unpatriotic to consider leaving. She also mentioned that it was now common for people to try to get foreign passports, just in case they want to leave in the future.

So do you agree with her perspective?

Does it match your experience?

What do you think makes people more pessimistic now, specifically, than in the past?

And if you disagree, could you explain why?

Thanks, guys. Looking forward to your answers. I've missed being here. :)

Update:

Tequila- Wow! I didn't know I was so influential. :)

I'm going to take that as a compliment, although somehow I doubt it was meant to be. (hehehehe)

Hello and how do you do Muslim by choice,

I am a born Israeli of Israeli descendants and I live in Israel. I volunteer for UNIFAN, which is a union designed especially for French immigrants and their absorption. Due to the rapid increase in anti semitism in France, many French Jewish people are moving here. We help them get acclimated into Israeli society. The number of French immigrants is so high that we have found it necessary to form two such organizations to help them, as many do not speak Hebrew yet.

2005 -2006, the largest amount of immigrants (Oleem Hadasheem - in Hebrew) were from USA and Canada. They claim that anti semitism and Nazism is at a rise in those two countries as well.

Also, because of her incredible strides in the world of science and technology, Israel is enjoying an excellent economy. Due to those rapidly growing advancements, many countries have opted to turn to Israel for education and advice. This has enabled many new job openings in Israel, which has a very large amount of universities considering her size.

We also have holders of work permits from China, Thailand and The Philippines. We also have citizens from just about every country in the world.

Russian Jewish people continue to immigrate to Israel in large numbers every year. And we expect there will be an increase in Jewish immigrants to Israel as the entire world is becoming increasingly more anti Semitic, anti Zionist and Anti Israel. The increase in anti semitism in Australia is startling. My cousin moved there and returned after six months, complaining about Australians hatred toward Jewish people, Zionism and Israel. This is the purpose for The State of Israel in the first place - so we will have a home when people turn against us as they have many times over in the past.

I know there is plenty of wishful thinking about the destruction of Israel by one means or another, however, more and more Israelis are beginning to realize that it isn't any easier to make one's way in life in other countries. Global economy and inflation has made it difficult making ends meet in just about any country. Look at the economy and inflation in the USA and the decline of the American Empire and it's mighty dollar, it is no longer "America" as we once new it.

Many who wish Israel to disappear simply have limited vision. They can't fathom the idea that there can actually be a solution to The Middle Eastern conflict. They feel it is necessary to destroy one in order to allow the other to exist. I am sorry to say it, but that is usually male mentality.

For those who believe that Jewish people had a home in the countries from whence they came, I say, if Jewish people had a home in those other countries and would have felt comfortable, there would have been no need for a Jewish state in the first place. Now that Israel exists, suddenly all Jewish people are welcome back in Europe? I don't think so!

Israel is alive and well, and it will remain that way. If we were able to create peace between Egypt and Israel, Jordan and Israel, then I trust that a solution is just around the corner for Palestinians and Israelis. Sooner than later Palestine will exist right next to Israel and peace will reign for us all.

    Ma'a el salaama

    Sincerely,

    Ms. Miche ; })

  • Yes, Israel is becoming more globalized, and this includes seeking opportunities in the US and Canada because obviously neighboring countries are not welcoming to Israelis.

I don't know if I agree with this perspective, to be honest. However, having left home at a young age, I understand the desire to encounter something different than day-to-day life.

I don't think people are necessarily more pessimistic - in fact a great many high school students are quite patriotic and there are programs which survive because of aid from diaspora Israelis - but tired.

Welcome back, friend. Is it just me, or has the collective IQ of the Israel board deteriorated since you were on here last? It has been lacking your knack for making your viewpoint respectfully known.

I personally know many Israelis who have moved to La, The Fairfax district is like little Tel aviv and their are many Israeli coffee shops and restaurants in the San Fernando Valley which is a large jewish residential and shopping area between Sgerman Oaks and Woodland Hills. There are also a lot in Japan, they control the street jewelery business there and also in Thailand which is cheap to live and very popular. There are many in Europe, especially the uk and in Australia and other places too. The general consensus is that most see no real economic or peaceful future in the promised land.

patriotism has taken second place to realism and the young Israelis don't want to do military service anymore than young Americans do. They get a taste of the good, safer life and prosperity elsewhere and are in no hurry, if ever to return to Israel. If it wasn't for family ties they would most probably never go back.and who could blame them.! After all, nationality aside, the grass is greener on the other side for young Israelis today. And I wish they would stop referring to Israel as the jewish State, I am jewish and like many jews feel this is not my homeland or my State, it is the State of Israel, not the Jewish State.!

  • Hi,

Let us wrap it up and come to final conclusion about this situation:

    - Israel, the patriotic Jewsih dream is doomed to vanish very soon. Judaism which failed to attract 20 million people in 4000 years has no place in a world free of myth. The new generations understand that very well and see no reason to defend and die for a myth.

    - All the propaganda displayed answering this question - mainly that displayed by Ms Miche (THOUGH I GAVE HER A THUMB UP)- is real funny and trying to give hope to the hopeless. What are we talking about? 400 French migrants?. Is this what it is about? The Israeli mentality is changing no doubt and the false dream which only benefits politicians was uncovered.

    I rest my case

Although I'm Israeli, I have been living outside of Israel for almost 28 years. Still, I have friends and family in Israel, so I feel I can answer your question.

Yes, it is true that Israelis are looking for a future in the U.S, Europe, or Australia. It has become much more common.

A great many distrust their government, want peace, but do not believe it will actually happen.

This pessimism, couples with economic hardships, force Israelis to seek educational and business opportunities elsewhere.

It is good to have you back, MBC:)

Now that you're back on-line, yes.

It's not what you intended, but that's what I planned to say before I clicked on the rest of your long question : ). I disagree with much of the above BBC content as it represents the views of a vocal minority who live in a bubble and do not speak for the vast majority of committed Jewish Israelis across this land.

And welcome back to Mr. Roo; I haven't noticed you about lately either.

I am not an Israeli but i have family living in Jerusalem.I think Jews are going back to their original countries because they finally realizing that they need to live in peace in their own "original" countries, it is normal for everybody to go back to where he is originally from.Palestinians belong to Palestine, Judaism is not a nationality, it is a religion ,so it is normal to see Jews go back and live in their original countries like Egypy,Yeman,England,USA,and other countries they Immigrated to Palestine from.

It is interesting fact that some Israelis realized that they don’t have future in the land of Palestine, I really admire the thinking of those Israelis who love their kids and they don’t want them to live in panic and danger for the rest of their life So they decide to leave Israel and go back to their original country

it is very clear now the number of Jews leaving Israel is more than the number of Jews immigrating to Israel.

I am not Israeli ( thanks God) I don’t know if I am allowed to answer your question according to your conditions or not, but it is interesting question and I am Palestinian and I lived 23 years in occupied Palestine.
