My mother has diabetes....?

She takes her insulin, follows her diet pretty well (occasionally too much carbs), walks three times a week, and drinks tons of water. She still smokes, takes care of my nephews( 3 of them from ages 7 to 9) from 2pm till 7pm and doesn't get home till 8 pm. The main problem is no matter what her and her doctor try they cannot get her meds right. Her pancreas just rejects it. I know that quitting smoking is important and maybe less stress, but does anyone have any other thoughts on what my mom can try? or has had a similar experience? Thank you for any information......

Well aside from taking her insulin she needs to be exercising more and following a carb controlled diet. She should eat about 40 g of carbs per meal and 2 15-20 g carb snacks one between breakfast and lunch the other between lunch and dinner. The carbs she eats should be fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. She should eat bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, and other complex starches in extreme moderation. Any kind of calorie containing beverage should be avoided i.e. soda, gatorade, sweet tea. She should walk six days a week for at least half an hour at a relatively brisk pace and increase this to an hour once she gets more fit. She should of course discuss this with her Dr. to ensure that she is healthy enough for this amount of exercise. If she is just seeing a regular Dr. she should get a referral to an endocrinologist. She should have a couple of lab tests. One is called an A1c test which is a 3 month average of her blood sugars. Of course fasting blood sugar and cholesterol checks are also recommended. She should be checking her blood sugars daily a long with her insulin shots. I hope some of this information is helpful.

While cinnamon will not cure your diabetes, it may reduce the amount of insulin you need. It may also help prevent the onset of diabetes. If you do plan to incorporate cinnamon into your diet, follow these simple tips:

Always contact your physician regarding any intention to alter your diet, including the incorporation of cinnamon into your diet.

Use ¼ to ½ teaspoon of cinnamon per day. Add it to your coffee, oatmeal, smoothie, or wherever you find it palatable.

If you already suffer from diabetes, be sure to stay on a regular schedule with your cinnamon usage so that your blood sugar levels don't yo-yo.Use the same amount at the same time every day so that you can get a sense of how cinnamon affects your own personal blood sugar readings.

Use the powdered spice or a cinnamon stick. Cinnamon pills are also available, and can be found easily via an online search. MHCP is water soluble and is not found in cinnamon oil.

Lime and lemon juice delay the digestion of starches as does vinegar. I've found that 2-3 tablespoons of lime or lemon juice reduces my post prandial BG response by 10-20 points. Rick Mendosa's site has a lot of material on acids in the diet. Take a look at http://www.mendosa.com/acidic_foods.htm .

This is two that mother can try. She must get control of this disease. The reasons: Amputations,,,Blindness,,,Strokes,,,. My mother did it her way and this was the outcome. Also may need to change doctors. Very few of them have any interest to treat diabetes. Good luck and good Question..
