I just bought a 2006 montecarlo LT 3.9 liter engine with dual exhaust? can explain to me how dual exhaust works? does it turn on and turn off? or does it stay on all the time? also how does this affect how your car idles and drives??
sometimes i can hear and low rumble sound under the car and feel a slight vibration when my foot is on the brake pedal at a stop light. is this the dual exhaust system also??

You don't have dual exhaust.. You have dual mufflers or dual exit.
Dual exhaust means a v engine (v6, v8, v10, etc) that has two banks of cyl. One of left and one on right side
Each bank has its own exhaust system.. Manifold or header on each side, 1 pipe one each side of car hooked to its maniflod or headers.
1 muffler per side
What most car's have now days is.
Left and right manifold.. A Y pipe that looks kinda like the letter Y. It hooks to each manifold then joins together into 1 pipe..
Then that pipe runs to 1 cat converter, and 1 pipe out of cat..
Now for the mufflers theres 2 ways OEMs are doing it..
One has another Y pipe and it splits into 2 single pipes and a mufflers is placed close to the end of each of those to give it the lood of duals..
The other way is..
Single pipe to a single muffler, muffler has 2 exits on it and 1 pipe comes out of each side of single muffler
Real or fake.. It's just exhaust, you don't have to turn it on, and off ..
Real dual exhaust helps exhaust gasses flow out better and there for makes more power..
Fake duals like you have is just a marketing tool, sales pitch type thing.. Something that looks cool, fast, etc sounds little better and helps the car sale.

Your car has a V6 engine, and each side of the V - called a "bank," has its own exhaust system, with catalytic converters, mufflers and tailpipe. It's done usually to give the exhaust system a deeper, more resonant tone (each exhaust system experiences more widely-seperated pressure pulses), and there's less backpressure in the exhaust system, which provides for better cylinder clearing during the exhaust stroke.
It is completely passive - nothing turns on or off. Dual exhaust is usually seen on cars that are intended to have a somewhat sportier nature than a typical passenger car, so if yours has duals than there's a good chance you have a somewhat more aggressive suspension setup, stickier or lower-profile tires, that sort of thing. Duals aren't cheap, so they don't just throw them on for looks.
To the addendum of your question - yes, probably. If it's especially powerful, it's a result of a resonant frequency - a sort of subfrequency where the two exhaust systems are partially canceling and reinforcing each other. Yeah, you'd feel that as a rumble. It's in step with your engine, but not at the same speed as your engine revs.

Dual exhaust just means that you have two separate tailpipes; one for each cylinder bank. This can be misleading because at some point they usually converge - often at the catalytic converter. All a dual exhaust does is reduce backpressure in a high performance engine. And your 3.9 is no high performance motor. The dual exhaust on this car is more for 'show' than 'go'.

Dual exhaust is continous. Think of it as your car having a breathing problem. Some have a hard time breathing in, some out, bad ones are both. Dual exhaust makes it much easier for your car to breath out. So, better performance. Also, unless you have a 2 into 1, you have the cool dual pipes out the back or side.

dual exhaust in general terms means one exhaust system per left and right side of your engine...very few new cars carry true duals these days because u need 2 catalytic converters by law and this is an added expense to the car maker.....there are some exceptions but they are usually rear wheel drives like mustangs........the exhaust systems today are tested for horse power and by changing mufflers pipes etc. u may get a sound u like better ,but rarely does it increase power........will not effect idle unless exhaust is restricted,,makes no differnce driving...the louder it is the more 5-0 u attract....remember ...just because its loud ....dosent mean its fast!

dual exhaust is just you have a manifold or header pipes for each side of the engines exhaust system running to two pipes that usually have glass packs or the like instead of them running to 1 muffler and then out 1 side or the rear of the car
no it cant be turned off and on
this is done usually for sound to make it sound meaner
idle and driveability shouldnt be any different

actually your car doesn't have true dual exhaust as your exhaust gasses come down into 1 pipe and then just before the mufflers it y's off and comes out 2 mufflers on your monte.

simple the exhaust has two means of leaving the engine bay, typically one for each back on a v block. this means better breathing ability and a greater power capability. it is a full time thing no valves. idle will be unaffected but you might feel a better power output.

an excellent form of issues happening here yet i've got faith ! all appropriate to one or 2 matters in basic terms. sounds as though a important inner fault has happened which includes a hollow in piston and helpful a head gasket subject. with out exhaust on one section we ought to constantly anticipate that monetary corporation ( one element of engine) isn't working ? engine ought to then be working very tough? idle very almost impossible. get a compression try on all cylinders asa first initiate. seek for oil in coolant and water in oil ( sump)

it works like any other exhaust system, but its better for the car, it allows more exhaust gases to exit the engine easily
