Is it illegal to download music from the Internet?
Before you answer yes, the more accurate question is "If I am downloading music from the Internet, how can I tell if what I am downloading is illegal or legal? How do I tell if the musician intended for the music to be openly available or not?"

Not in Holland, Downloading music is legal. Uploading music is illegal and downloading software is also illegal. So people, when you want to download your muisc legally. come to holland for a holiday, take your laptop with you and download all the music you want legally. Holland is a beautiful country and therefore spending a holiday here, is not too bad. Wooden shoes, tulips, windmils, coffee shops ( they dont sell coffee there).cows, bad weather, flat ( the highest mountain we have is 300 ft).

Check where you are downloading it from. Napster, Yahoo!, iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, etc. Those are pay sites which are legal.
Somethings on peer-to-peer are legal, but its hard to tell. I'd say stay away from torrents, bearshare, limewire, and the like.
If the artist intended it to be free, check their website, or sites like purevolume, myspace, or any other music site. It should say there that it is free or available for legal download.

Uploading or downloading copyright protected media - music, videos, images, software without the copyright holder's consent is illegal because it is theft.
Sometimes artists give away their songs for free - usually through their official site. You just have to be on the look-out for these special give-aways.

Check the website of a music retailer. If its for sale, then its probably illegal to download for free. If not, then its *possibly* (but not definitely) ok.

according to possibility. no remember if it is "loose", as in a starter band who's publishing their music for loose get carry of, then it is not unlawful. no remember if it is copyrighted cloth - something this is bought - music, courses, e-books, something - then sure, it is illegitimate. no remember if it is on the industry someplace - like iTunes, Amazon, suited purchase - then pass purchase it.
