Kennel Cough?

We have two boxers (6 and 8 years old) and almost 2 weeks ago they were put up in the kennel because we went on vacation. Now they both have a cough. It sounds like they're trying to hack up something but nothing is coming up. I guess during the day today, my grandma said that they were fine and once I got home from school, and they did their boxer excited wiggle, it started back up again. So it goes away and then comes back every couple of hours.

I heard kennel cough will run it's course and that it's just like a human cold but you need to keep an eye on it.

Do you think it's Kennel Cough? If it doesn't get better by tomorrow night, I'm taking them to the vet on Friday.

And yes, they have all of their shots and what not.

Update:

Yes, they've had their Bordatella because they can't even step foot in the door at their kennel without having one. I don't think it's any allergic reaction to anything from the kennel because they have been there hundreds of times.

My girl is a barker and I know she barks A LOT at the kennel because she comes back and doesn't bark at all. But her voice is back now.

They're also all caught up with their heartworm medications, I know coughing can be a sign of heart problems.

Yes, it does sound like kennel cough. Kennel cough sounds as if a dog has something caught in his throat. It is imperative to get a proper diagnosis and proper treatment at your vet's office.

While kennel cough is a virus (and typically viruses just need to run their course) it can still lead to pneumonia if not treated/watched properly.

Poor kids!! :) Good luck at the vet....

Hi. Kennel Cough is obviously a probability, however those signs can observe to a broad type of breathing ailments. He must be obvious via a vet. asap. Do no longer wait till your appointment in nine days. Vets don't do ellective surgical procedure on in poor health animals. FYI to all of the readers in the market. Kennel Cough may also be with no trouble vaccinated for as a dog, and must be performed on a annually groundwork. Many breeders, and puppy house owners don't do that, and that is an handy repair to restrict a long run hassle. For the ones of you who consider your puppy can't get this, consider once more. Any puppy in a public subject or round different puppies can get Kennel Cough.

Well, it definitely sounds like it could be Kennel Cough, but most kennels require that dogs who are boarded to have been vaccinated against Bordatella (kennel cough). Do you know if your dogs have had this vaccination? Again, if they were boarded their vaccinations should be up to date.

If they have been vaccinated appropriately, it's still possible that they contracted Kennel Cough, but in that case it would likely be a milder form of the disease and should clear up on it's own. However, it's important to check with your veterinarian and have him examine your dogs just to be sure. It's always better safe than sorry.

There's one other possibility. Are your dogs 'barkers'? Some dogs bark non-stop when left in boarding kennels. When they come home they're basically hoarse from barking and may have lost their voice or have a bit of a cough. You could check with the kennels to see if your dogs were barking a lot. If your dogs do turn out to have Kennel Cough I would also inform the boarding kennels of that fact as it's very contagious.

    Best of luck!

Having all their shots won't prevent kennel cough. And yes, it sounds like they have it. There are actually two types of kennel cough, one will run it's course and clear up on its own, the other is an infection and will require antibiotics to treat it. If the cough isn't better in a few days, or they start to hack up a clear liquid (keep an eye on them when they have coughing fits as there may only be a small amount of liquid) they will need a trip to the vet.

Unless you specifically ask your vet to vaccinate against kennel cough, most dont. However, most kennels do not take dogs without proof of kennel cough vaccination, so perhaps yours have had the vaccine, in which case, they should be okay. It could be an allergy to something in the kennels, but it does sound like they have picked something up there, and it sounds rather like kennel cough. This can be treated, so yes, if there is no improvement by tomorrow night, do take them to the vet on Friday, perhaps you could call them tomorrow and see what they say, if nothing else, it would put your mind at rest. I hope they are okay.

It is possible to catch kennel cough (respiratory infection in dogs) even if they are vaccinated, since the vaccine doesn't protect against all causes of infections. I heard that kc has to run its course as well....although that didn't work when I adopted my lab who had caught it at the shelter. His was caused by a strain of bacteria and actually worsened into pnumonia. It cost a lot of money at that point to get him well again. Even if they caught a virus that is causing it, the vet might still prescribe antibiotics to protect against a secondary infection.

I think that is smart of you to go ahead and have it checked out by the vet. Good for you, and good luck with your dogs!

Yep, sure sounds like kennel cough. Take them to the vet just to make sure, and they will give you medicine and it will clear up faster. Also, with some dogs, the vaccine makes them more susceptible to the virus if they are exposed, so the vaccine doesn't always work and sometimes works against you.

Kennel cough usually will run its course, but you'd have to watch. My pup had kennel cough, but it wasnt serious and by the end of the week the cough was gone.

Next time before you take them to a Kennel have them vaccinated against Kennel cough. It is very contagious and needs to be treated with anti-biotics.

Yep, this sounds like kennel cough, but don't worry. You probobbly don't have anything to worry about, because it will usually cure itself in a couple of days to a week. But if it doesn't you will want to get it checked out.
