If it's dried latex or oil-based paint, it doesn't qualify as a hazardous material - you should be legal with dumping it into the trash. You can try calling, but if they haven't encountered the question of dried paint, they might still tell you that it's a haz mat. Of course that would raise the question, are you supposed to dispose of old painted wood in a haz mat site too?

Now, even if the paint is dried, if any of those cans are old enough to have leaded paint in them, those you should turn over to a hazardous material disposal company.

if its latex based paint, remove the lid so that it is completely dried out. Once its dried out you can dispose of it in your regular trash. If its oil based paint you will have to dispose of it at a hazardous waste collection site.

If you're in the U.S. call Waste Management ( they are in all 50 states) They will tell you where their nearest site is for drop off.

Just an FYI...Waste Managemnt also takes paint that isn't used up and gives it away for free to anyone who wants it, for FREE! This is how I got free paint for my bathroom and for my kitchen ( granted I had to hunt for colors I liked, but I got it for free!)

Call your city offices and ask them where the nearest hazardous material drop-off location is located.

You can give it to your local ReUseIt Network group, or leave it at the Salvation Army or Better Living Center :)
