I work at an airport. My lunch cooler is x-rayed daily by security. Is the radiated food harmful to my health?
My lunch goes thru the standard security check point x-ray machine and is scanned presumably for weapons. This happens daily. Does the food absorb the radiation in harmful amounts? Is this amount dependant on the type of food? what are the possible hazards associated with eating the food after being x-rayed?

"Sending food items through a screening machine, whether at the airport or in your workplace, will not do anything to the food and the food will not contain radioactivity after it passes through the x rays. There are no short-term or long-term effects on the food or for you."

Everyday we are bombarded with natural radiation from the sun. Although the x-rays are a different kind of radiation (I think gamma instead of alpha or something) they wouldn't do it if it would make your insides glow!
If you are really worried about it why not buy lunch at work, I'm sure that won't have been put through the scanner. Ir maybe you could request that whilst they can scan the box could you take out the food, offer to open the sandwich etc..just explain that you are worried about radiation. I'm sure they will be able to explain it to you fully.

I wondered this myself as I am now working in a federal building and my lunch gets xrayed daily. My question is not about the small amounts of gamma rays the food potentially absorbs, but rather the same lunch box getting xrayed daily for over a year.
There is a reason xray techs leave the room when conducting xrays...its because they do them every day. So there is obviously a dosage concern.

I wouldnt like my food getting x-rayed on a daily basis, can you take it out and tell them to just look at it as you dont want radiaiton in your food. Did you know that microwaves are banned in russia because of unhealthy levels of radiation, and an x-ray gives off more radiation. Radiation can change the protein structure and take alot of nutrients out of food.

Why buy airport food! yuck! I like the film bag idea: after researching I could only find the baby rule about carrying on baby food items...
Your TSA should provide you with answers to those questions when requested since you scan on a daily basis.

If you use a microwave to heat up your food then your food is hit by radiation-- the spread of electromagnetic wave conduct--- everyday. Microwaves are used daily so I would say that there is no harm to your food that is x-rayed.

You can buy a reusable x-ray deflecting film bag. These bags are used for hi-speed infrared and x-ray photographic emulsions so that the security x-ray machine will not expose the film.
Put your food in the bag, run it through security, and be radiation free. Fold up the bag and reuse it for tomorrow's lunch.
You can find these anti-xray bags at hi-end photography stores for around $20. I use one for my hi-speed films.

Try watching the "Super Size Me" movie. It's about a guy in normal health who decides to see what happens to his body when he decides to eat McDonalds for 3 meals a day. It's very eye-opening. I don't know how these fast food company execs can live with themselves knowing how much their products hurt people...guess they don't care since they're rolling around in so much money.
