There are many causes for spotting early in pregnancy. For instance, when the fertilised egg attaches itself to the wall of the uterus, you may experience some implantation bleeding, which is usually light and lasts a day or two. Spotting also takes place if you have a vaginal infection, a somewhat irritated or inflamed cervix (you may bleed a bit after a cervical smear, for instance), or a cervical polyp, a benign growth.

But spotting can also be an early sign of miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, especially if accompanied by abdominal pain or cramping. And in the third trimester bleeding or spotting can signal a condition called placenta previa, placenta abruptio (whereby the placenta separates from the uterus), or premature labour.

If you notice spotting after 37 weeks, it's most likely to be just a sign that the cervix is beginning to soften, maybe even dilate, and you may observe a blood-tinged mucus discharge.

It's ok, hon, you just lost your mucus plug, that's all. You can safely wait for your appointment, unless you have any other changes, like contractions, heavy bleeding, etc. When I lost mine, there was a little bit of blood- doc said that it was because the very first bit of dilation was starting at that time, and that can cause just a touch of bleeding. It took another 3 1/2 weeks before I even went into labor! So no worry, no hurry- it seems scary now, but it's normal! Congrats to you, and happy Mother's Day! :)

As long as it's just a stain of blood and not severe hemorrhaging or anything I would stay put, also assuming you are term. Doctors usually say to wait it out because you still may not go into labor for a week. It's more comfortable at home, and there is less chance of getting an infection or unnecessary medical interventions.

A stain of blood is normal is you just lost your mucus plug.

    Some people don't even notice.

You're fine and I hope your hospital bag is ready.

You're going to have contractions pretty soon.

Just go to the hospital when that happens.

    (it may be before Wednesday)

Wait for your appointment...that is if you don't go into labor before hand. How far along are you? If you still have a ways left to go I would talk to your Dr ASAP but it is normal to lose your mucus plug before going into labor (can be days, weeks or even months before actual labor begins, but it's on it's way) congratulations.

I would go to the hospital to be on the safe side... Every doctor that ive had has told me if any of these things occur you always want to be safe, and go to the hospital.... good luck!
