It's because they have no idea what's really going or they only depend on stereotypes. Overall I think the U.S. is a wonderful country. I have yet to see a perfect government, so such hateful people have no room to talk.

Um what sites are you getting this from? Most sites I see are very hateful towards anything American(mostly the people that they have never met and try to claim the hatred is US government hatred which is a load of BS) and have nothing to do with foreign policy. Most are filled with hateful personal attacks that are media stereotypes. I see foreigners daily and can tell you even when they are here in the US visiting or on business they are very negative and seem to be disgusted (why they come here still confuses me). Europeans and Australians are by far the most hateful and I have to disagree with everything you say except for the Canadian thing. Most Canadians I know (and I know several in the US living here illegally) hate Americans.

Because your country is responsible for killing innocent Australian, New Zealand and British army boys lives in the Iraq War. & what for... oil?!?! If we had a serious war with another country I'd hardly doubt your country wouldn't help unless American gained wealth from it.
I also don't like American's because of the experiences I've had with them. I onced worked at McDonald's and these American Navy Sailors came in. I have never ever served the most ignorant, naive, arrogant, selfish and rude human beings in my entire life.
Your accent is also really really annoying and you are protrayed to be crazy and insane people on the tv. Eg: Jerry Springer.
If you don't believe me all you have to do is look in the Dictionary and discover "Americanised" is a word now-days. It's not that we hate you so much we never want to associate with you. It's the same with any race, good and bad people exist. It's jus the bad American's travel and earn their country a reputation.

This is an interesting question and quite complicated. If you think about the characteristics of a person you dislike then you can see that a country that displays these attributes would be disliked too.
If a country is:
- a bully: always wants its own way, pushes smaller countries around for its own benefit (eg trade agreements, embargos)
- violent: to its own people and to other countries (eg highest incarcaration rate, Iraq War, Guantanamo Bay)
- arrogant: always thinks it knows best and is doing things the right way (e.g. starting Iraq War without UN validation)
- insensitive and ignorant: to other country's values, cultures, priorities and perspectices (eg promoting democracy, Christianity and capitalism as the only proper ways to live)
- hypocritical: says one thing but does another (e.g. poor environment practices, flawed justice system, imperilled healthcare and education systems)
then it is going to get a bad reputation in the world.
This reputation is not just created by the government but by its citizens too. Hopefully the US's next leaders can repair this reputation by being and encouraging better world citizens.

You really must travel and see just what the competition is like. I recently returned from a brief visit to a Western Hemisphere sump hole where the biggest industry is the availability of child prostitutes of both sexes for American males in groups. It is protected by the government. The American presence in the world is not as clean and benevolent as one might expect.
Open your eyes. Read. America has never before had such an ugly face in the wide world.

Attempting to explain "why" people hate Americans, is in itself giving credence to the belief that it is indeed okay to hate someone because of their nationality, which in itself is on a number of levels, very wrong.
And yet still so many attempt to explain this apparent "hatred" for Americans, which may or may not be a tad fabricated, depending on whom you talk to.
I especially enjoy the answers explaining that if Americans were to simply "educate themselves more", only then would they realize why they are hated so. In a sense making the argument that the more you educate yourself, the more sense it will make to hate someone else for their nationality, because you will have learned the reasons why this hatred exists. Even though the idea of hating someone simply because of their nationality is inself rather flawed.

1 - as tourists, they have a tendency to be loud, pushy, disrespectful and condescending (examples which I have actually seen: throwing things at passerby from hotel balconies/purposedly rearranging furniture in hotel rooms just to be silly/lecturing locals as to how things should be done the American way)
2 - politically and culturally, they try to shove THEIR perspective of right and wrong in other parts of the world
3 - the hypocritical foreign policy; invading Iraq because Saddam was so "horrible" but allied with totalitarian Saudi Arabia, and they claim Communism is evil, but...since China is a manufacturing giant at cheap prices, are allied with them.
I gave a recommendation for Americans in a similar question to yours, and I will gladly repeat it:
1 - shut up
2- turn off the TV
3 - listen to what non-Americans have to say

Under President Bush's instructions Americans invaded and bombed a country that had no weapons of mass destruction and dragged many other countries into it by lies for US power and financial gain. Many thousands of people including 4,000 young US soldiers have lost there lives. "What for"
This is why, many people dislike the US for this......

Add this up and you can't blame any person disliking us Americans. We have all been Bush's pawns and screwed.
Listen to everything what non Americans are telling you it's all 100% truth.

I don't think people hate Americans.
I'm Canadian, and although our Country is connected greatly to yours (through trade, media, etc), I can really care less what goes on in your country.
I think it doesn't have to be argued that America is.. "in the center of the Universe." America is IT - the powerhouse, the main man, etc etc.
Maybe it's not hating America, it's more of being critical of the country for fun (just like on the Y! message boards!) because most common citizens in other nations are trying to deal with their own day to day lives to care what George Bush is doing (unless it directly affects them etc ...........)
