What is the book Catcher in the Rye...? about?

Here in Australia it is not compulsory reading in High Schools, yet I get the impression it is "vital" reading in the American school system, is it a good book, something suitable for a 15 year old, or interesting enough to make it enjoyable reading for an adult

It is a great book. It is an easy read.

It deals with the interrelationship between people who are in a very poor environment.

At 15, you'll probably find parts of it very racy.

I read it when I was about 13, only because it was on the 'banned list' and I was a rebel. It's about interpersonal relationships. I read it again as an adult, and enjoyed it more. I think everyone can see a bit of themselves in Holden Caufield.
