What is the book Catcher in the Rye...? about?

Here in Australia it is not compulsory reading in High Schools, yet I get the impression it is "vital" reading in the American school system, is it a good book, something suitable for a 15 year old, or interesting enough to make it enjoyable reading for an adult

Catcher in the Rye is a GREAT book; a coming of age story about a 14 year old boy named Holden Caulfield. J.D. Salinger was a brilliant, reclusive writer and our only insight into his psyche is through his books and very limited interviews with past lovers. When I read the book, I imagined Holden to be Salinger's alter ego -- the character is so vividly drawn and you will feel you really know him by the end of the book.

It has been 35 years since I read that book, at your age, and I still remember it. Enjoy!

It would be a great book for you to read.

Some find it 'not great' (--Possibly because some feel they are 'made' to read it against their will, so they don't really read it. They fake it, by asking questions here--)...

Which is a pretty funny thing, since 'faking it' is pointed out fairly often in this book.

It's a short book, suitable for both students (like a 15 year-old) and adults. I still have my copy from many years ago, and read it now and then. Great ending. Good book.
