Can someone help me find guidance on designing a post and pier foundation and sub-floor?

I'm adding on to an island cabin that already has a post and pier foundation, so I would like to stick to post and pier for the addition. (Concrete is tough to get out there.)

Can you recommend some reference resources for how to design such a foundation? I see sites that show how to build one, but not so much about how to design them.

Update:

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I'll definitely get a permit. I'm just trying to understand the foundation issues before I submit all the paperwork.

I'm mostly concerned about making sure this is a good, low-maintenance approach. I really don't want to spend a lot of time jacking and leveling if I can avoid it, but then again, I'm not big on moving concrete by hand.
