There are so many applications and possibilities for optimizing Windows...

    CLEAN UP Startup Programs

Do you have an antivirus, antispyware, firewall and a bunch of other programs running at the same time? Here’s an advice. Disable Windows Defender. Install just one good antivirus / antispyware. Windows Firewall is enough for most of us, so don't buy another Firewall.

Remove that “Acrobat Quick Launch” from your startup programs. Yes, it allows you to launch Acrobat faster. But it slows down everything else! If you have iPod, make sure Real Player or iTunes do not run on startup. How do you do that? You can use msconfig if you are technical enough.

    MAINTAIN Disk and Registry

Most people know that they need to clean up and defragment disks and the Registry in order to speed up their computer. But I learned that not many of them know that the order in which you do it is important.

    1. Start with cleaning the disks. Remove all the junk files you don’t need. Boost Speed or any other disk cleaner will be able to help.

    2. Clean the Registry. Just like the disks, the Registry accumulates hundreds or even thousands of junk registry keys.

    3. After you clean the Registry, the keys are not physically removed, still slowing down your PC. Defragment the Registry to completely remove the junk keys.

    4. Finally, defragment the disk. Defragmentation puts fragments of each file together so that each file can be read instantaneously in one go.

DISABLE Services you might not need...

Services are programs that run whenever you power on your PC. That means they are always loaded in memory, taking space and CPU time. Microsoft did their best and your PC runs services to print documents, to browse Internet, to run Windows Messenger or to allow remote connections to your PC.

But more likely than not, you just don’t need all of them! To really speed up your PC you need to disable many of the services.

Do not use "msconfig" to disable services, type "services.msc" in the Run box instead!

Press your Windows key and then hit the R button. This will open up your Run command box.

The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console (services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is disabling the service.

The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no reason exists to justify disabling "everything."

Apart from these solutions above, there are of course other things you can do to speed up your computer. Look at disabling extra visual effects...

Adjust visual effects... You can optimize performance by changing how menus and windows appear.

To do this... Right Click on Computer on Desktop > Choose Properties > Advance System Setting > Under... Performance... Choose... Setting > Choose... Adjust for Best Performance > Then... Apply > Then...Ok

    Turn off NTFS indexing.

All -or- Some of these will make your XP faster... Good Luck.

Assuming you have no hardware problems, do this:

    (1) Run a FULL anti-virus scan with a good virus scanner and delete any malware that crops up. be sure to use the latest virus definitions file.

    (2) Run anti-spyware scans with Spybot S&D and AdAware, and remove any malware if found.

    (3) Ensure all Microsoft security updates are applied.

    (4) Run diskcleanup using Ccleaner to delete old temp files and other junk

    (5) Run a thorough disk defrag. Use a good defragmenter for this, and also run a boot-time defrag to fix the MFT and page file if they are fragmented. The easiest and most effective way to manage defragmentation is with an automatic background defragmenter so that you don't have to waste time defragging or scheduling defrags. The automatic defragger will do everything quietly in the background and vaccinate the drives against the insidious fragmentation disk 'disease'.

    (6) Disable unnecessary background processes and services that take up memory.

    (7) Make sure all the hardware components have the latest and most stable drivers.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

I agree with BLAZE. My gess is that it is a virus. if you cannot find anything with BLAZE's steps, press cntrl-alt-delete, select task manager and look at Processes or performance. f there is a mysterious, non SYSTEM process, back up your stuff and atempt to end it. Also, on performance, if your ram and CPU usage lines are high, then you likely have a virus. If it only spikes, you just have a slow computer, too many programs. If RAM usage is high and CPU isn't, add more RAM.

Run a defragmentation (right click on C:\\, then go to tools, then defragmentation) This might take a while

run a disk cleanup(right click on C:'', then go to disk cleanup, check everything, and click ok)

Go to run, then type in MSCONFIG, and uncheck anything unnecessary under the startup tab.
